Mouse infestation...yuck.

Please don't judge DH and I. I promise we're clean people who keep a clean home. But every year when the weather gets colder, we get mice in our kitchen! It's so disgusting. They get into our silverware and utensil drawers and I find droppings in them. It's nauseating.

Each time I find droppings I run the utensils through our dishwasher and scrub everything down with bleach. DH sets traps underneath our sink and we catch probably 1-2 mice every couple of weeks! For the longest time DH was reluctant to call an exterminator (he feels like all they will do is put down the same traps we already use, and then charge us an arm and a leg for their service). We got into a big fight about it tonight and I finally convinced him to call a damn exterminator. I'm beyond angry and so frustrated/disgusted with the whole situation.

Long story short (sorry for the vent), is that the rodent issue has always grossed me out, but now that I'm pregnant I'm very worried that being exposed to rodents and their droppings could be harmful to my baby in some way. I'm sure they carry all sorts of nasty diseases. Of course I had to consult Dr. Google, and now I'm freaking out.

Anyone else here that's dealt with a mouse infestation before, especially during pregnancy?

  • That sounds like a terrible battle. Since you are calling exterminators, incase they decide to use any pesticides or sprays etc just please be very careful not to inhale those. We were getting termite treatment in our house when i discovered i was pregnant and my OB told me to just abandon the treatment since anyways termite was not that much of a nusance.
  • Someone posted similar last time I was pregnant. A recommendation was to put silverware in gallon size freezer bags in the drawers. It sounds like you must have holes that need to be filled since this is an annual cold weather problem. I'd look into someone to find and fill the holes!

This isn't very good advice, as mouse droppings can carry disease.

OP did you talk to your doctor? I'd put anything in my kitchen that goes into my mouth in sealed bags or containers until you resolve your issue. This includes the food too, which, as an added plus, if you seal it up properly may deter them from coming into your home in the first place.

Hopefully the exterminator will do that or at least mark them!

  • Certainly mice are gross, but I don't think it makes you gross- H swears he sees droppings in our basement and we keep a very clean house. I think it is just really common in some areas.

I would def make sure to seal your food containers and maybe wash stuff before you use it just to be careful. You can get plastic bins to store stuff in that would probably at least keep them out of your food. Then maybe call someone to come check for entry points.
  • We have a kitty who used to be a mouse catching pro, but he's gotten lazy in his old age ;) Thanks for the replies everyone. We called around to a couple of different exterminators who told us that our best bet is to figure out where they're coming in from, so that's our next step. I'm going to call my OB to make sure she thinks everything is still okay with the baby too. In the meantime we're keeping our utensils in plastic gallon freezer bags!
  • We live in a small old house that has a dirt floor basement. We experience the same problem during the cold weather. We have cats and they will typically catch three to four mice or moles a week. However, we don't really have a permanent fix as they can just retunnel into the basement if we fill in the hole.

I friend just told me about small plug ins that produce sound a frequency that we can't hear to keep mice away. She swears by them so the next time I can ge to the hard ware store I think I will invest in a couple to try.
  • Omggg so! I woke up this morning to find a mouse on our kitchen counter!!! We're clean people too but ughhhhh isn't it sooo gross!! We still haven't found it.... we have probably ten traps set but nothing yet. I just feel so violated... Get out of my house!! So thankful I found this post... Happy to know we're not alone... Hoping I'll be able to sleep tonight! Blahh
  • Make sure you clean all surfaces too. Mice are incontinent so as they have no bladder control they will pee on every surface they run over. You are right, the sooner you get the exterminators in the better!
  • I had this problem with rats last winter. Make sure you close up any openings because they can squeeze into some amazingly small gaps. Once the holes are closed keep setting traps inside to catch any living in the house and maybe set some pet safe bait traps outside to try to keep the neighborhood population down. This is the approach my exterminator took last winter when I had rats in the attic and I haven't heard one scurry since. Good luck!
