Chiropractor

Anyone else seeing a chiropractor or have previous experience with going to one while pregnant? I have heard great things about the benefits of chiropractic care for pain management during pregnancy and reduce labor times (???)...I have an appointment on Wednesday with one that specializes in pregnancy care and am looking forward to it. Wanted to hear from you all any feedback you may have on treatment (positive or negative) or previous pregnancy benefits.

Re: Chiropractor

  • I've never been during pregnancy but I had horrible middle back pain after DD and the chiropractor really helped me with that.

I'm interest to hear other's responses, especially since I am having such horrible pelvic pain this time around.
Praying this is our take home baby. STICK TURKEY Mommy will miss you everyday my beautiful angel. We love you Lilypie Angel and Memorial tickers M/C on 1/05/11 at 11 weeks.

  • I've been seeing mine since 13 weeks and she's been a godsend at relieving my pain related to SPD. She also adjusts my toddlers.

  • I saw one last pregnancy and it was so great! Helped immensely with the hip and back pain. I've just started to get it again so going to start going to one soon.
  • I go to the chiropractor every week. I have prior back problems that intensified with pregnancy, and I don't think I'd be able to walk if I didn't go! Just obviously make sure they know you're pregnant. :)
  • It's a must have for me. I've heard, although it's probably anecdotal evidence, that regular chiropractic adjustments during pregnancy helps with labor and delivery. I've not been the last several weeks, but as I get bigger, my back and hips hurt more and I'll resume my visits.

  • So this may be a silly question, but they said they have a 'special table' for pregnant women...I suppose I'll find out tomorrow, but how do they do most of your adjusting? I'm used to my non-prego self being able to lay on my stomach and have my back leaned into, thinking that's not necessarily the case these days?

  • It's pretty much the same as when you're not pregnant. The table at mine just drops down so there's room for your belly While laying on your stomach. I get a lot more hip and pelvic adjustments while pregnant. I've been going since 8 weeks and go once a week and it's amazing. Just make sure it's a good chiropractor. I've been going since a car accident in high school off and on and some are waaay better then others. The one I have now is probably the best I've been too.

Mine has a table that the belly area lowers. They will probably adjust their movement to avoid unnecessary pressure on your abdomen.

  • I've been told to see a massage therapist instead of a chiropractor.

    Why?

  • Yes, yes. Yes!!!! And the chiro is helping me sooo much! Enjoy :)
  • I just started going to a friend who is a chiropractor and it has been amazing! I wish I would have done it with my first. I was having terrible hip pain and shooting pain through my leg and she was able to adjust me and show me different pregnancy friendly stretches to help me heal. After 3 adjustments my hip barely aches at all and it's mostly just sore from stretching it out more! She's now helping me with my neck and shoulder and it's so nice to not be in pain constantly.
  • I see my chiro about every three weeks and he is a life saver. I feel great. Massage is good too, I'm lucky that it's also covered by H's health insurance. That said, it's definitely not a replacement for a chiropractic adjustment. More supplementary.

  • My OB just suggested that I see a chiropractor for the remainder of my pregnancy due to my back and hip pain. I haven't seen a chiropractor in 20 years, but I am excited to call some tomorrow and get an appointment ASAP!
  • I see my chiropractor everyday lol I work for one. Best thing I could have done was to get adjusted this pregnancy. So far it has improved my sleep improved my posture and low back pain. Love love love my adjustments!!
  • I went to the chiropractor for about a month (2-3x a week) because I was having lower back/hip pain since becoming pregnant and saw zero improvement. I stopped going and started just doing some exercises my doctor gave me and they seam to be helping a little.
  • I have seen my chiropractor a few times since being pregnant. She is amazing. I always leave feeling so much better. I was seeing her before I was pregnant as well. She has added in some new moves to help with new hip stiffness. I have been using the same table as normal but my bump is pretty small still. Not sure if that is why. She does put these angled support pillows under my hips when laying on my stomach during the tens cycle.  I would recommend seeing a chiropractor. I am a FTM so I can't say if it helps make delivery any easier but have heard that many times.
  • My insurance doesn't cover chiropractic visits, so I'm crushed after reading how beneficial you've all found it to be! I'm going to call around and see if any of them have affordable rates for uninsured/insured without coverage patients, because I think my back and hips would feel much better even with occasional adjustments.

You may be surprised to find that some chiro's are pretty affordable even without insurance. A few years ago, my coverage didn't include alternative care and I was in the same boat. Was able to find someone that would do adjustments for $30 a pop (no pun intended, hehe!).

Heading out to my first prego chiro appointment in 20 mins. Having so much shoulder pain and can feel something out of line in my lower back. I.can.not.WAIT!!!
  • I'm asking my doctor on Friday about going to a chiro. A doula was telling me that it can really help keep your hips in alignment that assists with labor.
  • Lurking from August 14/March16. I saw a chiropractor once a week from weeks 15-34. From 34-delivery I went twice a week. I went from 4-10 cm in an hour and pushed 3 times! I swear it was because I was "all lined up". Not to mention it helped so much with all of my aches and pains! I have already started going for this current pregnancy! Good luck ladies!
  • Thought I'd give a report back. I am SO glad I went and will be going back again in 2 weeks. I am happy to say that I did not have hip pain while sleeping last night, and today was the first time in weeks that I woke up without any neck pain. I literally had 4 ribs that were out of place and a bunch of alignment issues from my jaw down to my hips. The adjustment felt amazing though my muscles were sore all evening. I took a nice warm epsom salt soak at night which helped. Will be continuing to go throughout as he also specializes in the Webster method and should I need to encourage baby to get in the right position, this will come in very handy! He also mentioned that hip alignment was key to a less lengthy labor and higher chances of a successful vaginal birth - which are both high on my list of hopeful outcomes. If you are on the fence, I would say, GO! :)
  • My doc recommended against it. :/

Just curious if your doc is an MD or a DO?

Just curious, did your doctor give a reason? Like high-risk or something? I have never heard of a case when it was not recommended.
  • I went to my OB today and was told to absolutely go see a chiropractor if I was having pain issues and wanted to try.  I'm looking forward to my chiropractor appt tomorrow!

  • I've been going a couple of weeks now and it's made the world of difference. On Monday the pain in my back was so bad I popped in for an extra visit and my chiro said he'd put $$ on her having moved from transverse to head down and he was right! It's made the world of difference to my hip pain too. Can't recommend enough how good this has been!

Mine is cheaper out of pocket than through insurance. So annoying!

  • **Totally lurking from another board** I recently began seeing a Chiropractor. My pregnancy has brought back some really bad muscle spasms in my back. It was bad. Seeing the Chiropractor has been a HUGE help. I can walk around on my own again. I can move around again. I'm not worried about my leg giving out on me anymore (that bad) and it really helped to reduce my back and leg pain. I suggest you try it.
  • She's a DO. Do you think that makes a difference? I'm seeing her partner in a couple weeks and am going to ask again and more details. I didn't ask a lot of follow up questions after she said no and should have, she just said its not good to get your pelvis adjusted. A little frustrated that I didn't ask more.

Usually DOs are more acceptable of chiropractic care. I'm not sure what she means by getting your pelvis adjusted.

  • I'm surprised a DO didn't recommend it.  I believe they typically are pretty supportive of methods such as seeing a chiropractor; because of the whole body approach to medicine. Maybe the DO has specific reasons for you why it wasn't recommended. I would def ask again though when you see the other partner in the practice. I have found seeing a chiropractor so beneficial. I honestly don't know if I could make it through without going to see one.
