Always full?

This is my second time nursing and I really struggled to keep my supply up for dd1 toward the end, so I'm thrilled that I seem to have higher supply this time around. But no matter how long my baby nurses, my breasts always feel full! She's getting plenty to eat (at three weeks she's gained almost 2 lbs!), so I'm not worried about that. But im trying to decide if I ought to pump and store the excess milk for when I go back to work or if I need to let things even out naturally. I'd love to have a huge stockpile, but I don't want to create problems by increasing my supply too much. What do you mommies think?

Re: Always full?

  • I've been pumping and storing my milk for future use ! I also have over supply issues !

  • I'm only 6 days pp, but I'm debating this same thing. I have 8 weeks off, so there is time to stockpile, but I also want to take advantage of this engorgement. I think I'm going to start pumping the side he doesn't nurse on next week.
  • I have a serious oversupply issue. Our LO is only 1 week and I can easily pump 150mL at a feeding... on one side. I am following the LLL guidelines for single-breast feeding to reduce my supply. Pumping can be a good thing, but I would recommend it only once or twice a day (this again from LLL). This way you can produce a little more for storage, but not create a milk imbalance.
  • Due to my daughter being premature I have been pumping exclusively. I only pump 5 times a day and have been consistently getting between 6 and 8 ounces each time. My LO currently only eats 30-40ml 8 times a day. I have frozen over 200 ounces of breast milk in a week and a half.
You can get a huge stockpile fast if do start pumping after your LO nurses but it will most likely increase your milk production.
  • My LO is 3 weeks as well and my supply is more this time (even though I didn't struggle with low supply last time). My boobs are softer now after nursing than they were, but not empty ever. I haven't started pumping, but plan to do once a day after the morning feed to start my stash. I'm hoping that helps a little.
