Paying a friend to watch LO

So I have a friend that is a SAHM right now with her own 6 month old.  I am currently taking mine to daycare, but it's much too costly.  We are paying $205 a week.  She has offered to take care of him.  For an average of 30 hours a week, how much should I pay her?  It'd be cash up front each month, and she's staying at home regardless with her own child, so this would just be extra income for her.  Thoughts?

Re: Paying a friend to watch LO

  • I would pay at least $150 a week ($600 a month) or an amount that you can both agree on. My daughter attends an in home daycare and that is what I paid when she was an infant. I wouldn't pay any higher although some in my area did charge higher. I would use the $150 as a starting point though.

  • I pay my friend about 4 to 5 an hr to watch my little one. She also watches someone elses kid and pretty much has free reign as in if she needs to run errands she can.
In my areas in home daycares are about 125 to 150 a week, this information I found on craigslist.
  • My SIL will be watching our LO ( she's a SAHM and watches other kids ). Her going rate for us $130 a week.

  • Using the SIL too. Paying her $200 a week. Its still a big discount compared to other care options here in CA.
  • I have a friend/former colleague watching our LO 3-4 days a week until we can get in with the church daycare.  We're paying $50 a day, which we've been told is too much.  But, she is a former teacher, we trust her and we wanted to make it worth her while.  (She was considering going back to work because money is tight.)
