Low milk supply

Hi! My baby boy is just two weeks old and I have really been trying to breastfeed but I have a low supply. We are supplementing him to make sure he is fed and nourished but I'm not ready to give up just yet. I have met with a lactation consultant but wanted to see if anyone had anything that worked to help increase supply. Any ideas are welcome!! Thanks so much!

Re: Low milk supply

  • I have the same problems as you. I met with a breastfeeding specialist and my family doctor to see who could help me with this. After several tips from my breastfeeding specialist it seemed that nothing was happening, until my family doctor suggested the "Domperidone pills" and they worked! Now I'm doing so much better with making enough milk for my 6 week old baby boy that i hardly use formula anymore.

    Hope this helped.
    Good luck!
  • I'm having this problem at 3 weeks pp and trying to turn it around. No idea if my advice will work, as I haven't been doing it long enough to see if it's worked for me. But, it's kept us from needing to supplement with formula, for now at least.
I'm nursing on both sides at every feed for 15 minutes each side then pumping for 10 minutes on both sides. If LO is still hungry I feed him what I pumped after his feed.
I'm taking more milk plus pills from mother love which have a bunch of herbs that are good for breast milk production. I increased the amount of food I am eating, added oatmeal to the mix, and doubled the water I'm drinking. I also take feeding me more seriously as I was pretty much starving myself to feed LO in the first 2 weeks.
For 2 days I did 'power pumping' pump for 20 minutes on both sides then rest for 10, pump for 10, rest for 10, and then pump for 10. It was a gruesome schedule that I wouldn't have been able to do had my husband not been home so I suggest a weekend if your DH is back at work already.
Some other people have suggested eating dates and drinking cranberry juice.
Oh and if you are using a shield ditch it. After the power pumping I didn't need it anyway, it pulled my flat nipples out enough to not need it.

-all this is combined from my pediatrician, a LC that came to my home and other posters from a thread I posted in the Oct 2015 birth club.
    Good luck to you!

  • What makes you think your supply is low? It is normal for a 2 week old to nurse almost constantly. Are you getting 8 wet diapers with clear yellow urine and atleast 2 poops a day? Is baby sleeping or content between feedings? Is baby back at birth weight? If not then there is a supply issue. When you do supplement with formula be sure to pump or the supply will go down. Make sure to keep yourself hydrated, get as much sleep as possible and you can try the teas and oatmeal. If it doesn't help find a local La Leche League leader who can help.
  • I know my supply is low because the baby wasn't gaining weight. We supplement him with formula but I am trying to bulk up my supply to stop supplementing. My lactation consultant mentioned donoeridone but I'm concerned about the side effects.
  • I've been using the Domperidone pills and had no side effects to them. And I'm almost done supplementing. :)

You won't lose anything by trying?
  • There are natural teas & supplements that are supposed to increase milk supply.
  • Im planning on starting https://www.mrsmilk.com/ right after birth. In going to take the bars & tea. Pretty much fenugreek is supposed increase the supply.
  • Domperidrone is very hard to come by in the US, it's not approved by the FDA for use to increase supply
  • All research I've done leads to drinking Mothers Milk Tea, lactation cookies and I now started taking the supplement Fenugreek. That supplement supposedly increases milk production up by 900x within 24-72 hours. Just started yesterday. Crossing my fingers!
