High Blood Pressure! Eek! Anyone else?

I couldn't find a recent post on this... I went to my doctor Monday and had a BP of 148/88 and +2 protein in my urine so they ordered a 24 hour urine catch and blood work. Unfortunately I worked last night and tonight so I wouldn't be able to start it until Thirsday morning (I'm a night shift nurse). Well, last night at work I started to feel really crappy, head ache and my legs were swollen so I checked my pressure... 150/105!!! I called my OB when I got home and she wants to see me this afternoon. Looks like I'm not going to work tonight, heck, she may put me on bed rest! I'm 34 weeks tomorrow so I hope I can make it a few more weeks! Ugh... Things were going so good with this pregnancy... Too good to be true I guess. I have GD on top of this whole mess too. Darn crappy placenta!

Re: High Blood Pressure! Eek! Anyone else?

  • My blood pressure has slowly been rising the past two months and I'm only 30 weeks. While all my tests come back clear, I still end up admitted after every appointment for in depth tests. Yesterday my bp was 160/100 and I ended spending a few hours once again in L&D. I'm on modified bed rest and I have two appointments every week.
I know it's frustrating but sometimes there's nothing you can do but be thankful your doctor is on top of things! I would also be prepared to be taken out of work early, I don't work but my doctor said I'd have been pulled out if I were.

  • I've had high BP pretty much since the beginning of my pregnancy. They put me on labatelol (sp) and that seems to have taken care of it, but I have been going in to see the doc every single week and now have to do a nonstress test every week.I hope everything works out well for you and nothing major is going on.
  • I had extremely high blood pressure in my previous pregnancy (210/118 when I was hospitalized) that almost happened overnight.  It occurred around 34 weeks and I delivered at 34 weeks 6 days.  While I had severe preeclampsia, I also had HELLP which is why it was a serious emergency for me and I had to deliver.  That being said, while 150/105 is high, this isn't necessarily something that will cause you to deliver early.  Like you mentioned, you may be put on bed rest or blood pressure medication.  My sister-in-law was put on hospital bed rest at 28 weeks because her blood pressure was around this number.  She made it a few more weeks and then had to deliver.  I can tell you, from previous experience that at 34 weeks, your LO shouldn't have bad problems if you do have to deliver.  He/she may still have to go to the NICU for some time, but the hospital classifies a baby born 34 weeks + in the "good" range for preemies.  My LO is 3 now and perfectly healthy.

Sorry you are going through this.  I know how difficult it is first hand.  Listen to your doc and take care of yourself!  Keep us updated too!

  • At my last appointment they took my bp three x. I was told if the dr did not like the last reading then I was going to the hospital. It was normal but I left with the next available appointment (2 weeks like I would have anyway) and an order for blood work and the 24 hr urine analysis. I haven't heard from the dr and they didn't feel like I needed to be squeezed in the schedule earlier so I feel good about that. I got really worried at first but what it comes down to is better to be safe then sorry. If bed rest is what your body needs to help your baby then that is what needs to happen. I hope you get good news when you see the dr.
  • Thanks everyone! At the OB now waiting for her to come in. BP was 138/92. I kind of hope for bed rest or off work... That was scary last night! I don't want to do any harm to me or the baby because I'm trying to be a rock star at work.
  • Hope all went well at the OB.  138/92 isn't too bad.  Hope you feel better soon!

Thanks! I did my 24 hour urine, dropped it off today and did the blood work they ordered while I was at the lab. She said if my number comes back over 300 on the urine I'm done work until DD arrives and I'll be induced early. They checked my urine at the office when I had my appointment and there wasn't any there this time. Ugh... I just don't know what to think. She also ordered me another growth scan ultrasound, so I have that in a little over a week. My body is falling apart! :((
  • @navyblueladybug how is everything going with you? I hope you are feeling ok!

I'm started having high BP around 33 weeks. I just turned 34 and got put on strict bedrest. I had all the tests done and everything came back normal. If I get up and do normal activities, my BP just shoots up. If I lay down though, it goes down to a "pre-hypertension" range. Bedrest is very hard with a toddler!

I had PreE last pregnancy so I know my doc is being extra cautious. I didn't do bedrest last time Bc it was sudden and was induced at 36 weeks.

I'm just curious if I don't develop PreE this time (just a waiting game I guess) if they will induce me early- about 37 weeks. Has anyone been induced for just High BP if there were complications in your last Pregnancy?
  • @1stbabyforAT Thanks for asking! My BP is still high... I checked it at work the past two nights and it's been high 150's/90's, but when I went to the doctor last time after not working for a few days it was 126/84! It's definitely brought on by stress and and running around. My OB said if it was up while I was at work this week she will make me go on medical leave (which I'm fine with). I'm going to call today and tell her my numbers so I can let work know earlier so they can find coverage if I'm not coming back to work. Still no pre-e for me though, just high BP
  • I had severe preeclampsia with my twins last year and they were born via emergency c-section at 32 weeks because of it. My blood pressure was up around 20 weeks this pregnancy and I was on labetelol twice a day, it dropped and my doctor switched it to only once a day, and then at my appointment I Wednesday it was 144/98 repeatedly so I was admitted for two hours to do a NST and get labs done. Was back Friday with it up again, and now I'm going twice weekly for appointments and hoping that we can make it another two or three weeks. I'm 33w5d.
