Those On Progesterone....

A little background on my story before I ask my question. My husband and I have been experiencing secondary infertility for two years now (our son is 3). We got our BFP on 9/11, but I miscarried at 5 weeks. We jumped right back in and I've been lurking in hopes of joining you ladies soon.

With my miscarried pregnancy I was using over-the-counter progesterone cream twice a day. When I had my betas and progesterone checked at 3w6d everything was fine and I severely cut back on using the cream, figuring I didn't need to add any extra hormones to my system. I miscarried that week. We went to see a Reproductive Endocrinologist today. When I mentioned my worry over low progesterone levels she said that it wasn't a possibility because I have normal cycles and ovulate every month. My question for those of you put on progesterone supplements with your pregnancy: do you have a history of wacky cycles/ovulation? It seems to me that you can have a normal history and still not produce enough progesterone during pregnancy.

Re: Those On Progesterone....

  • If I were you, I would make sure my progesterone level is tested as soon as I got the next BFP. They should do that any way if you're doing IUI.

  • My dr put me on progesterone before procedure and continued. I would not stop progesterone but also would not take it unless ok by dr. My dr said he keeps patients on it plus estrogen as it ensures levels don't drop. If levels drop miscarriage may occur.

  • Your doctor acting so non-chalant about it seems odd to me. When I was put on Progesterone my doctor was very insistent that I need to be consistent with my use of the supplemental pills. She said that I would be weened off in my second trimester. I was under the impression that a sudden drop in Progesterone level could effect a pregnancy adversely. That said, I'm not a doctor, you should definitely talk to your doctor again about it and stress to them that you are anxious and need more guidance/explination.
  • I'm just stopping by was part of April 2016. I ovulate and have a normal cycle but also have low progesterone I was taking an oral supplement everyday. My dr said even if it wasn't low and I was taking it there has never been any study showing to much is harmful. After my first loss she thought it was because of low P but after my 2nd loss we learned I have MTHFR. Congrats ladies!!
  • Little late to chime in but my doctor put me in them after my first blood work at 5 weeks because my progesterone was low side of normal. She said it was just precautionary but it sure made me feel better.

  • I've been dealing with infertility for over two years as well. Although I have normal cycles and ovulate every month, I was tracking my luteal phase between 9-11 days and suspected a progesterone deficiency. Especially because I spot 2-3 days before every period. We finally got pregnant naturally, but we're being seen by the Repo endo once we found out. My first progesterone and 4w4d was 13.6 and my second at 4w6d was 10.9. They put me on progesterone suppositories, but don't feel the need to check my levels again. I haven't had any problems so far and I'm 7w5d, and haven't had any bleeding.

They did say, there's no guarantee that progesterone would even help, but they wanted the best chance possible.

If you are truly concerned, get a second opinion. You should be able to assuage any concerns or fears you may have, and this doctor may not be doing it for you.
  • I have a normal cycle but 26 days instead of 28. I miscarried in early August, and tests showed a progesterone level of 4 before I physically miscarried. I had my progesterone tested after that miscarriage and was told it was "adequate". With this pregnancy I insisted my levels be checked, and am glad I did! My tests showed at week 5 my progesterone started to plummet. The nurse told me it was good I listened to my instincts and ordered the test myself (they didn't check the progesterone box on my lab form, so I took the liberty!), they wouldn't have caught it. So yes, I have normal periods, and my body doesn't produce enough progesterone come week 5. I'm now nearly in my seventh week, and doing fine(knock on wood!). I would trust your instincts and ask for what you think you need, whether that is from this doc or a different one. All the best to you!

Kinda funny I just seen this. I never expected to be apart of this birth month!
  • I had low progesterone, just under normal before my first pregnancy. I had really short luteal phases. 8-9 days but I would usually start spotting at 5dpo. My cycles were anywhere from 30 some days to 63 days and ovulation occurring anyere from day 19-46. If you haven't begin charting, read taking charge of your fertility by Toni Weschler and lurk over in ttgp. They have alot of good information.
  • Well hells bells zombie thread.... My bad ladies

  • I've had 2 miscarriages and as soon as I got my bfp my doctor put me in progesterone suppositories and so far at 5 weeks 5 days I'm still doing fine! All of my levels are coming back great and no spotting! Good luck!!
  • With this pregnancy and my last, my doctor put me on progesterone as a precaution because of my age (40).  I've always had normal cycles.  I was told to take it from 3 days after ovulation until AF arrived or once I was pregnant, until I was 12 weeks.  I've always been told not to just quit taking it.

I think if you are on progesterone and you stop taking it, you can miscarry. That's why my nurse told me. However, only your doc would know if you should be on it or not. Most of them think it can't hurt. I have not heard of people using OTC cream. It's either Crinone, the suppositories or progesterone in oil.

I'm on the POI shots and will be discontinuing at Week 10. Thank God.
