Vent regarding toxins

So we recently bought a new house from someone who smoked. It feels like every decision we made regarding renovations is potentially catastrophic for our baby's health. Old carpets have toxic remnants from cigarettes, new carpets release toxic VOC's into the air, hard floors would lead to baby bumping his head and potentially getting hurt. It seems like no matter what decisions we make as parents we're putting our children in danger. I don't live in fear of all these things but it's still frustrating. I guess I need to stop looking at google! Okay rant over.

Re: Vent regarding toxins

  • Kids are going to bang their heads on everything no matter what you do. Get hardwood floors and I don't think anyone has ever died from carpet off gassing...it's just not that big of a deal. I used to nanny for a woman that was crazy about letting every thing air out and all it did was drive everyone nuts. Stop overthinking it and just live. You survived just fine so will your baby.

  • Yeah, sounds like you need to chill out a bit! If you put carpet into some of the rooms can you not use them for a few days to prevent some of the off-gassing? I'd choose hardwood out of those 3 choices. You can get an area rug or whatever. There are toxins in the air too, but we will go on living. Baby will be fine. If we worried about every single thing that could harm our babies, we would go crazy!
  • This seems a bit over the top...
  • I'm anxious about those things too but it will drive you crazy. If you can afford it, I'd recommend hardwoods due to resale value and the look is beautiful. You can get a rug. But seriously stay off google!!! It made me a wreck with my first child. I actually called the carpet people to ask about off gassing. Lol, they thought I was nuts.
