Anyone deliver with a cold?

I was due 2 days ago and of course I'm starting to get my son's cold :( did any mamas deliver with a cold and what did you do about it? Scared about passing it onto baby, though I will be breastfeeding if all goes well and some antibodies will be passed through the milk.

Re: Anyone deliver with a cold?

  • I will be. I was due Wednesday and I've had a cold since the week before. My doctor says it going to be harder to get rid of until after delivery to a the immune system being slightly compromised. She didn't seem concerned. I also am Gbs+ so I will be getting antibiotics during delivery anyway.

  • Good to know your doc didn't seem too concerned! I'm hoping this is just the common cold like DS has and not the beginning of strep or something. I'm also GBS+ so antibiotics are already in my future in case it is strep or a sinus infection.

I hope you feel better before your delivery! At least you got sick last week and might be on the mend soon.

  • I came down with a cold the day before I gave birth. The pediatrician was not concerned and recommended to just wash my hands frequently and breastfeed often to make sure baby got antibodies. He didn't get that cold.

Three weeks later, though, DH brought home a chest cold and the whole house got it. The best way to help baby is to breastfeed. DS got over the cold way faster than DH and I did.

  • I had a cold and it didn't affect the baby at all.
The worse part about it was having to cough after delivery. I had no idea that coughing involved the muscles down there.... now that was painful.
  • DD caught a cold from DS at 10 days old. I was worried but she did great! Just had to use saline drops and suction her nose (I use NoseFrida). As long as she could nurse she was happy and she's pretty much over it now.
  • Our LO caught our daughter's cold and she is just a week today. My midwife didn't seem to concerned, but told me that if baby coughs then to go straight to the emergency room. Coughing can break their little ribs or can indicate fluid in the lungs. Other than that, we bought the nosefrida to suck out any congestion, and I bought a rectal thermometer to watch for a temperature. I EBF so I know she is getting my antibodies, but it can still be quite rattling.
  • Yes, and am breast feeding. It his not seems to effect my LO at all. It made things a little tougher on me, but docs were not worried.
