Help! Diaper rash on my 5 day old.

This is my first baby and he is just 5 days old and has already started to develop a rash on his bum. His bum is bright red right around his anus. We have been putting butt paste on it at every changing since we saw it was red; but would like some help in preventing rashes in the future!

We have been changing him overtime we hear him poop and when we see the diaper strip turn blue to indicate that he has peed. Could changing him so often be causing a rash? Sometimes he poops just the tiniest bit and I'm not sure if I should change the whole diaper or let him stay in that one until he poops more?

Re: Help! Diaper rash on my 5 day old.

  • Changing often definitely doesn't cause the rash. Keeping boudreaux's on it will help and also adding some baking soda to his bath water will really shorten the length of the rash. Mine has had one as well and I don't remember my first son having one this early. I think it depends on their skin sesitivity, frequency of pooping and contents of said poop. G

  • Mine had what you described and it ended up being a yeast infection. The doctor prescribed medicine and it won't away in a few days.
  • My son had a rash just like that, around 5-6 days too. I waited til his first appt to ask the doctor if I should put anything on it.. She prescribed an ointment that did not help. It got worse. So we tried desitin sensitive and it instantly worked, the rash looked way better by the next changing. Also in stead on using wipes, we literally washed his butt in the sink every time. Kinda tedious but helped.
  • I wouldn't worry about it just yet as long as you notice it looking better after a few changes of applying the cream. If it starts to be a regular thing I'd ask the pedi but also possibly try a different diaper and/or wipe brand.

  • I use Aquaphor around my sons anus and on his butt cheeks at every change. Just for protection from any irritating bowel movements. He hasn't had any rashes. It's petroleum jelly based and protects the skin, kinda acts as a barrier. Also, frequent changing of diapers will help the situation, not hurt.
  • Are you using the same type if diapers? Last week we tried some target brand diapers ob my DD and she broke out in a rash. We had thought it was just from her BM's. We use coconut oil with lavender in it but it wasn't helping. Switched back to pampers and the problem went away. At work some parents use Aquaphor and butt paste every change and it has really helped prevent any rash! I would for sure keep changing often though!
  • Type of diapers could be an issue, and you can get the brand figured out now and 2 months from now, you may have to change again due to changes in baby's skin. We changed 4 times with DD and ended up back where we started with Pampers after a few months. When my son's bum starts to get a little red, I use generic A&D ointment and it kicks it out between changes. You may also look into sensitive wipes or just using water on a soft cloth to clean with changes. If you can get by with it and it's just a wet diaper, you can just let it air dry without wiping, which is what our ped recommended when my older DD had rashes. If you are BFing, what you eat can also impact how acidic your LOs BMs are. Take a look on Pinterest for what foods to avoid during BFing and you can see certain acidic foods (bell peppers, tomatoes, citrus, etc) should possibly be avoided. I did not avoid all of them with my DD, but had to stay away from red peppers... Just the red ones as it would immediately create the worst diaper rash. Any other color was fine for some reason... And red peppers with hummus is a fav snack of mine. Good luck mama and if it gets worse or starts to look really painful, contact your ped. Fresh air is great for rashes, so if you can, let bum air out as much as possible. There might be messes, but air works wonders.
  • Coconut oil is good for their skin. I use it in place of rash creams. I have multiple friends who said they babies are allergic to the diapers with the wetness indicater. Just something to think about as a possible cause?
  • Our ped told us to set him in a warm place and take his diaper off periodically and let him be naked. We'll set him on puppy pads so if he pees or poops we don't have to clean up (except him!). It helps the rash and he loves just hanging naked lol
  • My daughter had a rash as well and it broke the skin a bit. Our pediatrician told us it was from the constant wiping. He said every time we wipe her after her poops, we are removing the healing skin. I was using so much butr paste for her and jt wasnt helping much at all. So he told us to stop wiping her. He said after every bowel movement, rinse off her bottom in the sink. Her butt was so much better in just 2 or 3 days! Her rash is gone and she is no longer red, but we are still doing it and just wiping her when we are in public or out of the house.
  • So helpful! I am having the same issue and despite keeping butt paste on, still doesn't seem to help. I'll try rinsing him instead of constantly wiping :) thanks!

  • If they just pee you don't always have to wipe, just sometimes. My baby girl got a bad rash in her first week of life, we stopped wiping every diaper if it was just wet, put Desitin on her until the rash went away. Once the rash disappeared we would put baby powder on her at every diaper change just to prevent a rash. She is now 6 weeks old and hasn't had a rash since.
