Hello everyone, my name is Alyssa. My husband and I have been TTC for 13 months. I have a history of endometriosis, PID that scared one tube, cysts but no formal PCOS diagnosis, and cervical dysplasia treated with surgery once and laser another. We knew going into this we may have trouble so started immediately after getting married. My OBGYN wanted to start tests after 6 months instead of a year and as soon as we were about to start testing I was separately diagnosed with Graves Diseases. Graves is an autoimmune condition that affects your thyroid and makes it produce too much hormone. Graves can cause infertility and if I was to get pregnant significantly increases the risks of miscarriage and other complications. So we added one more thing to the list of hurdles and stopped actively TTC. I didn't like the traditional Graves treatments so decided to try alternative therapy (which I also didn't do for the 3 months I just put my head in the sand) I started acupuncture and herbs and my numbers were still getting worse. So I finally decided to start on the medicine the doctor prescribed. The opinions on the medicine are controversial if it is safe during pregnancy, but many women aren't diagnosed with Graves until they are pregnant so the have to choice. I don't think its responsible to actively TTC while on the medicine so we are not, but there is no guarantee how long I will have to be on the medicine (they typically want someone to be on it for 6mos-year), if it will even work, or if I will stay in remission when off the medicine or while pregnant. I finally realized that while I was so focused on the Graves, that there may still be a handful of other things that could stop us from getting pregnant, so we decided to resume testing to get all other things diagnosed or crossed off the list while I am waiting for the medicine to work (hopefully) My husband has had his sperm analysis, we are waiting on the results and I have my hysterosalpingogram scheduled for November.
We have a lot of factors working against us, and aren't really sure where this is going to go. I have tried dealing with all of this on my own but if I'm being honest with myself, I don't think I am handling it all very well. I am hoping that by joining this community, I can help someone like me, and perhaps feel a little less alone myself.

Hi Alyssa. I am new to TheBump and found your post through a search I did for Graves Disease. I too have Graves Disease. I was diagnosed in early 2012 and had radiation treatment to destroy my thyroid. Now that my thyroid is gone I take Levothyroxine each day to replace those hormones. I am at a point where my thyroid levels are steading and my OBGYN and Internalist, who manages my thyroid, say it is totally safe for me to TTC. Both Doctors and others I have spoken with say my medication is safe to take while pregnant and I will actually need to slowly increase my dosage when I am pregnant so the baby will get enough thyroid hormones.
I know what you're going through, having a lot of other factors with your health to think about while TTC. You're not alone! Good luck to you.
