Choking?!

Does any one else's baby act like they are choking at times? My little guy does here and there and I asked about it in the hospital and was told it's due to some remaining amniotic fluid in the lungs. However, he just did it again tonight and gave us a big scare as his eyes got big like he couldn't get air for a second. He's 9 days old now and I'm thinking he should be passed having done fluid but maybe I'm wrong. I will monitor him through the night and call tomorrow whether it happens again or not.

Re: Choking?!

  • Is it just when they eat? Mine does it at least twice each feed. I just sit him up and hit his back until he stops. That's what the nurses told me to do. If it isn't while baby is eating is it shortly after? I also read that if you keep them upright for fifteen to twenty minutes after eating it should help.

  • I also notice LOs will do it if they didn't get a good burp and gas is working it's way out, or if they fell asleep while nursing and there is some milk still in their mouth. I'd definitely put a call in to get some peace of mind.

He will cough when he eats so I pat him. This will happen randomly and he gags a little but hasn't expelled anything and then tonight was like it choked him. A few other things I've read were its most likely mucous that gets the back of their throat and their defense is to gag. Still scares me!
  • Mine is 3 weeks old and has done this from time to time, even up to an hour after eating. I think in our case it's due to some reflux, which is very common and for the most part, you just wait it out. It is so scary when they choke like that though! I feel like I have to be on high alert for his sounds at all times, esp at night.

  • My LO did this in the hospital and they told me the same thing. It was a few days later at home, she did it again, then would waver her arms in the air like she couldn't breathe! Ends up, she had severe reflux. If it continues, go see a GI specialist. Both of my kids had reflux and  sadly I am expecting my third to have it too! But I know what to look out for now! Good luck!
