Prenatals

I should probably re-clarify with my OB, but I was just curious if anyone else is going through the same thing. On top of my prenatals, my OB has me taking extra of everything - fish oil, vitamins B12 & D, folic acid.....I feel like such an old lady taking so many pills, I broke down and bought a 7 day pill case.

Re: Prenatals

  • I thought prenatals usually have enough folic acid in them? I just switched to Citrinatal bcalm vitamins which have two additional b6 tablets you take on a timed schedule. In addition I take DHA and a probiotic, so not really as many extra supplements as you. I would check because sometimes I know too much of a vitamin is not necessarily a good thing.

  • I take 4mg of folate (my prenatal has 1mg in it) per dr orders. its an ok vitamin to take extra of and some people need it. Like me.

I'm a little different since I have MTHFR. My prenatal is 8 pills a day. I also take a baby aspirin a day, an iron pill, 2 DHA, and 1 Metanx a day. Metanx is methylated folate, b6, and b12. I feel you on the old lady thing. I hate choking down so many pills.
  • Go with what your OB said. Many prenatals have low levels of vitamin D and people tend to need more through diet in the winter so that makes sense. I'm on extra folic acid too because I have an aunt who was born with spina bifida. Fish oil is for the DHA which helps to grow the brain. Not sure what B12 does but thats only because I'm not on that one, I'm sure there is a valid purpose. It sucks but its all to make a healthy baby, right?

I'm taking a prenatal that has 1400mg vitamin D in it. I'm also taking calcium and DHA at the recommendation of my OBGYN. However, after seeing my endocrinologist, she freaked out at the DHA and told me to stop taking it. I don't know if she's going by an older study or feels it's just bad for me in particular.

EDIT: I remember she mentioned that it was a hormone that could mess me and the baby up. Looking at Dr. Google, I think she had a brain fart and confused DHEA (hormone) with DHA (Omega-3 fatty acid).

I just started taking DHA because I just realized I was supposed to. Hope I didn't mess up any development!
That's all I take in addition to my prenatal, but my prenatals have everything else you are taking separately.

  • Target has a good prenatal dha, no fish oil in it. It's a red and white box next to the prenatal vitamins.

  • I am taking the same one a day with DHA each night that I have been taking for 18 months now. I am drinking a glass of OJ in the am and pm as well as v8 at lunch.

I did decide to start taking extra calcium, iron and b12 in the morning because DD and peanut will be 17 months apart I want to make sure my body is covered(I don't drink milk).

    But I wouldn't otherwise.
