  • I reintroduced it in the secind trimester. I don't drink it every day but would feel comfortable doing so. As long as you stick to the guideline you'll be fine.

  • I have 1 cup a day in the morning with my poptart. All is well.
  • I have one cup every morning.  I've had an espresso drink on occasion too.  I limited it for a little while during the first trimester, but once I found out that 200mg a day or less was considered okay, I carried on with my 1 cup a day coffees.
  • 2 shots starbucks espresso is 150 ml caffiene, which is the amount in a grande latte. 200 is supposed to be the magic cut off. So your cups or two of home brew should be more than safe.

*if you find you're having cramping, drink extra water, rest and lay off the caffiene.
  • I abstained from coffee and every form of caffeine in the first trimester, mainly due to the heartburn. My OB said it was ok though to drink 200 mg and under throughout. I just wanted to wait until the second trimester to take any medication and I knew I was going to start taking Prilosec. I usually drink around 150 or less a day and baby has been perfectly on track. I have given up a lot with this pregnancy and I need to indulge in at least one thing. lol

  • I didnt drink coffee during my 1st tri, and now i have one when i feel like it. Nothing wrong with 1-2 cups per day. Just found out that when hubby orders it he gets me decaf! Haa! Never even noticed lol
  • I didn't drink coffee when we were trying, and stopped during my first 2 trimesters. I 'just' started introducing it again in the last few weeks, so at 26 weeks. I mainly stopped because I was trying to stay hydrated, and then because my morning sickness was out of control.

I do not think I could survive this pregnancy without sushi or coffee. I just limit what I have.

  • I still drink 1-2 cups of coffee a day or a coffee and a pop. I try to limit it to 2 but sometimes I drink more. My OB said as long as you're not guzzling Red Bull and espresso all day it's okay.

As a side note, I know a couple women who completely stopped all caffeine and then started again after baby was born. They also breastfed and because of the reintroduction of caffeine, they had issues with their kids having stomach issues for a while and one ended up stopping caffeine again to alleviate it. I don't know if that is common or if it's more coincidence but it might be something to consider?
  • You're fine, drink your coffee. I don't drink any most of the first trimester but that's because it makes me gag when I have morning sickness. Which means I a) don't poop and b) get wicked headaches. Sadness.

  • My OB says 1 cup full-caffeine drip coffee per day is fine, and decaf (minimal caffeine) for the rest of the day if I want it. I've been making my morning brew half-decaf so that I can drink a little more (it's pumpkin spice time!). Espresso may have more caffeine per volume, but you tend to drink a higher volume of coffee, and it depends on how strong you make it/how hot your water gets/method of brewing, so keep that in mind too. A big mug of full strength coffee can easily have more caffeine than a couple shots of espresso.
