Seriously, stop snoring!

Between insomnia and my DH snoring like a freight train, I get no sleep. Anyone else have Someone that snores? Any tricks you care to share to get them to stop?

Re: Seriously, stop snoring!

  • My husband snores. He also sometimes makes this gross spit clicking sound in the back of his throat. These sounds usually don't bother me except that now I wake up to pee 4 times a night and these noises keep me awake. I just nudge him or poke his shoulder and he stops for a few minutes without waking up. If he does wake up I pretend I'm sleeping and he goes back to sleep pretty fast. I just have to hope I fall asleep before the snores begin again :((

  • My H snores too, I've come up with one trick. I make a loud and firm SHHHHH sound and I swear he stops snoring immediately without waking up and stays quiet long enough for me to fall back to sleep. Also make sure he doesn't sleep on his back!
  • I second the no back-sleeping suggestion. Usually I'm the big spoon (even though I'm so much smaller) because it allows me to readjust DH when he's snoring by shifting his weight differently or moving his shoulders without jabbing him.
  • If you have the money, a split king bed with an adjustable frame that allows you to raise/lower the head can be a life-saver.

Alternatively, kick him out to another room. Which I totally did to my husband the last 3 months.

  • Yes!!!! It's horrible. I'm gentle the first few times I'm woken up...I'll give a nice loud SHhhhh but after that, it's on like donkey kong. I jab or elbow, anything to wake him up. I need sleep!
  • He's not even a back snorer! He snores on his side mainly. Lately I've been nudging him or telling him to roll over but now that I don't sleep through the night, sheesh! I never knew it was this bad. I'm going to try the shhhhh technique tonight because we all know its going to happen.

Has anyone ever tried those snoring strips from the store?
  • The only way my DH doesn't snore is if he is laying on his right side. It used to be either side but within the last year, that changed. I'm terrified of the day that it doesn't matter how he sleeps. He's a super sound sleeper (he never, ever heard our DD when she was a baby) so I almost have to wake him up a little bit to get him to roll over. It's not big deal to him though.

If it's really bad, I just go sleep on the sofa. He also has "twitchy legs" that keep me up worse than the snoring because there is no way to stop them. One night a couple weeks ago it actually made me sea sick.

  • OMG!! Yeeeeeesssss
I just realized last night that he doesn't snore on his right side and I sleep to the left of him. So the plan is to play big spoon and keep him to his right. I hate it when he sleeps on his back and he knows it. I'm much less kind than some PP I give him a kick or elbow to shut him up.

  • I don't have a snorer, but I have had awful insomnia. I started taking unisom (the kind with doxylamine) a few days ago to help with nausea and an added benefit is I'm sleeping much, much better. I used to toss and turn for HOURS any time I woke up, but now I can wake up, go to the bathroom, and fall right back asleep.
  • Between DH and our Pit Bull, I get it in stereo!  And let me tell you, that pit bull of ours can saw some logs!!!!!!!

I tried those with an ex but they caused patchy dry red skin on his nose so that stopped pretty fast...they did work though for nasal snores.
  • I call H my lawn mower. I was very nice at first. Now I just shake him until he wakes up. All is fair in love and sleep.

Big spoons unite! My husband doesn't snore, so I have nothing to contribute to this. However, my dad did, and I swear with my pregnancy edge if my husband snored that bad I would be flipping s%#t!

  • I hit him and wake him up and yell "you are snoring". He is a heavy sleeper. Sleeping on his side helps.
  • I run 3 fans in our bedroom, that drowns out DH snoring. The more fans you can run the better. It is the ONLY thing that helps, we have tried everything.
  • DH snores if he falls asleep on his back, but that's usually only if he's absolutely exhausted. I'm a pretty light sleeper even normally so when he does this I nudge him until he stops. Which of course takes awhile usually bc he's a pretty heavy sleeper.

We sleep with a fan on in our room for the noise and lately I've been moving it over to my side and that helps.

He does make a conscious effort to fall asleep on his side now though which is nice. :)
  • Yessss!!!! My man is so bad!! I almost always fall asleep before him which is good but as soon as I wake up to pee it's all over. It's not even that he snores loud... but he also has this like gurgle thing going on. Drives me crazzzyyyy!! He's also the kind of person you do not want to wake up because he gets so very grumpy!!! (I told him he's going to have to work on that before the baby comes) I usually just end up going to the couch if i can't get back to sleep.

I'm going to try getting a fan and putting it on my side of the bed and hope that helps!
  • DH bought me the sleep strips when I was in my 3rd trimester with DD. They worked for me.

I usually kick or nudge DH to get him to roll over. Or I toss and turn really hard in bed and that will usually get him to roll over. Last resort, I go sleep on the couch. However I did notice that he brought in some ear plugs for me from his office. I don't usually like things in my ears, but I'll have to give it a try. White noise also helps.

  • My husband rides dirt bikes and he saw this meme saying "I don't snore. I'm dreaming of dirt bike riding." So now every time I mention he was snoring he says "I was dreaming I'm a dirt bike." But I usually gently brush his arm or shoulder and he adjusts. This generally works without waking him up.
  • DH does so I make him roll onto his side. When I can't fall asleep fast enough before he starts again I'll nudge him or warm my hands and put them on his cold arm that's out of the blanket.
