High-Risk Pregnancy

Cholestasis in pregnancy

I was just diagnosed with this and I wanted to pass along some information because it is very serious and a danger to the baby if it develops.  I had extreme itching of my palms and soles of my feet (with no visible rash), mainly at night.  It would wake me up it was so bad and then I could not get back to sleep.  No matter how much I itched it would not go away.  I went online and read about cholestasis - https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/cholestasis-of-pregnancy/basics/definition/con-20032985

At my OB appointment, I told the OB about my symptoms and she sent my bloodwork out to check liver function and bile acids.  The bloodwork confirmed cholestasis.  I am now taking Ursodiol until delivery, and maternal fetal medicine recommends delivery between 37-38 weeks so my repeat c-section is scheduled for 37+4.  My MFM doctor told me how happy she was that I didn't brush off the symptoms and that I requested the bloodwork to check for this.

I did not have this condition with my prior pregnancy, so I knew nothing about it until I was 36 weeks.  So if you have symptoms of this, please ask your OB to check your bloodwork!
