Blood thinner Mommys

I was told by my doctor if I go into labor early, the hospital will deny me epidural but there is also medication that can be given to me until the blood thinners are out of my system. I'm freaking out because I want the epidural and not feel "the ring of fire". What were your experiences like during labor when on blood thinners? Was the other medication, the ones that cross into the placenta and make the baby also a bit druggie ?

  • Are you on heparin or lovenox?

  • Iv just been switched to heparin.
  • Okay.
I believe they can give you something if you go into labor right after taking an injection to level out your blood.
It sounds to me like you need to have a more in depth conversation with your doctor about all of the options.
For me, if My water breaks I just don't take my next dose and head into the hospital. (Last time I waited 10 hours and my dr wasn't super pleased but oh well). I am not 100% set on or against an epidural but " most" labors will allow you plenty of time to be done with your dose in time to get an epidural.

  • I'm curious too! I've been worried ever since I heard that I might not be able to get an epidural depending on timing. I'm switching to heparin in a week. I'm just hoping I go into labor several hours after my last injection haha.
  • I asked my doctor about the hospital just doing a Vitiman k drip to contract the medicine and she said they don't do that. She did say there is other medicines they can give me until the blood thinner is out of my system but I don't want it if it crosses in the placenta. Hopefully my high pain tolerance kicks in and I can hold it off.
  • *counter act not contract
  • I was on lovenox until this week. My doctors told me if I were to go into labor while on the lovenox I would have to wait 24 hours from last dose for an epidural (because of the half life of the meds). But with the heparin, if I've taken a dose right before labor starts, I can be given meds to counteract the heparin...still leaving me the option of an epidural. If labor starts before my next dose is due, I most likely Will not need meds to counteract the heparin.
Hopefully you can talk more with your docs, and work it out so that an epidural is still an option for you!! Good luck!!!
