Please no judgement. i have not used marijuana since i found out i was pregnant with my little man. i am now 2 weeks postpartum, and exclusively breastfeeding. ive read about how you shouldnt smoke marijuana while breastfeeding, and also read about how they havent done enough research on it. i was just wondering if any of you moms have done it, or are doing it, & how it effected your baby, or your milk supply?
I wouldn't. It stores in your fat cells which you draw from for some of the fat in the milk so you would be passing THC to baby. And I mean no judgement by this but you don't need to be getting high with an infant. They will give you enough sleep deprivation on their own and make you forget whether or not you showered already today. You need to stay alert for their safety. I know a real life example of 2 stoners that co slept and rolled over and suffocated the babies. So don't put your child at risk to be forgotten in the bathtub and drown or something. Not to mention if something happens and you need to drive the baby somewhere. That's how kids end up in foster care system or worse

I have to agree. I have a ton of friends that smoke so I absolutely do not judge. You like weed, I like wine.
My thoughts are the same as PP though. It's hard enough to take care of a 2 week old being stone cold sober so even if you can handle weed better than most people, I'd refrain for a while. At least until you can ask a medical professional about how it will affect your baby through your breast milk. It's so not worth it if it you are going to pass that along to your brand new baby.

I have not ingested marijuana while breast feeding. Just FYI if your pediatrician suspects you are using drugs while breastfeeding they can take hair and blood samples of the infant. If the baby tests positive then social services can get involved. I'm not judging you, even though I don't think its the best choice. I'm simply making you aware that your choice could really cost you.
https://kellymom.com/bf/can-i-breastfeed/lifestyle/marijuana/ "According to Hale, analysis of breastmilk from chronic heavy users indicated an eight-fold concentration in milk compared to mom’s blood plasma, however the dose received by baby was insufficient to produce significant side effects. Studies have shown significant absorption and metabolism in infants, although long term effects have not been shown.
Marijuana can cause sleepiness in the baby, which can lead to slow weight gain and possibly slow overall development in the baby long term. In addition, babies whose mothers smoke marijuana regularly have a higher risk of SIDS.
Hale reports a possibility of decreased milk production. In animals, THC decreases the amount of milk produced by suppressing the production of prolactin and, possibly, by a direct action on the mammary glands.
There is significant brain growth occurring during a baby’s first months of life; marijuana may alter brain cells. Animal studies (on babies whose mothers’ milk contained THC) have shown that DNA and RNA metabolism may also be affected and the proteins needed for proper growth and development impaired.
After a breastfeeding mother uses marijuana, THC is evident in her baby’s urine and stools (Perez-Reyes and Wall, 1982). Infants exposed to marijuana via breast milk will test positive in urine screens for long periods (2-3 weeks).
One study (Astley and Little, 1990) found that exposure to marijuana through their mother’s milk during the first month of life resulted in decreased motor development at one year of age. In another study of 27 infants evaluated at 1 year of age who were exposed to marijuana via breastmilk (compared to 35 nonexposed infants), no significant differences were found in terms of age at weaning, growth, and mental or motor development. Follow-up of these infants has been limited."

Social services can take away your child if shown positive for marijuana. We had a newborn baby come to us. The poor baby was "stoned" for a month until the drug cleared the system. Very negative on the baby's brain from what we could tell. The personality came out nearly to the day the social worker said the marijuana would leave the system. Please don't set your child up for failure.
Not a smoker myself, but I do have an acquaintance that smoked with both of her babies. I'm sure she still continues to do so, and surprisingly her ped. doesn't say much about it. I did hear that once her DD went off of her ganja-milk she was very cranky and didn't sleep well. I imagine she'll have the same results with DS.
No judgement here, it comes from the earth ready to go, but I just don't think any potential risk is worth the calmness it gives you. Maybe just a glass of wine here and there until you're done BFing?
If you haven't smoked for such a long time, why don't you want to wait a little longer? Yes, they haven't done enough research, but it is better not to risk. Of course, there are cases when medical marijuana is prescribed by a doctor, but as I understood, this is not about you. I guess, your baby's health is more important than smoking. I would wait.
@megan5111, you do realize the baby is now about three years old, right?
