Small hips

I went in for my 38 week check up and my ob told me i have small hips that need to open up. If they don't then a csection is possible. What are the chances of my hips not opening up properly?

I'm not a medical professional so I can't answer that for you, it would definitely be a question for your OB to answer.

I would highly recommend doing some research of your own so that you can discuss this with your provider before you agree to an induction or section for this reason. Based on what I have read, issues where the baby physically can't fit out are rare. However, I am not a healthcare provider. I would check out evidence based birth and birth without fear. I am sorry you are dealing with all this and will be thinking about you.

That sounds ridiculous. With my 1st my OB was somewhat concerned that I am tiny and was having a large baby for me. But he said smaller women can do larger babies and larger women have a hard time with smaller babies. So you never know until actual labor. In my case I did end up with a C-section. It had nothing to do with my hips though. Baby wouldn't fit through my pelvis was the problem.

Also, your hips will get wider when you're in labor. I remember looking at myself in the mirror a day after my LO was born and seeing how much of a difference there was in my hips. It was like looking at another person. They were significantly wider even a day after giving birth.

My aunt was 75 lbs with a boyish figure and she delivered 5 kids. I also have really narrow hips and doc hasn't said boo about it.

Is it a condition that is more than narrow hips? Like something with a name that we just aren't aware of?

I have NEVER heard of this before. Nor have I been told this, because I have a fairly small hip setup. However, I've noticed my hops a little wider than what they use to be. And I'm only 31+5. If you feel like your OB is off on this, I suggest getting a second opinion, just in case!

It really has nothing to do with your hips and so much more to do with your actual pelvis. Most women are built to birth babies, even large ones. I'm 5'2" but I give birth to an 8lb 4oz baby just fine. Your bod produces hormones that relax the ligaments in your pelvis prior to delivery that help loosen and widen this opening. Some of us, like me, have that loosening happen weeks and weeks before delivery (hello, pelvic girdle pain). I'd get a second opinion or ask your OB what they mean by this. Are they trying to push for a c-section?

I don't understand what they mean by small hips ? Baby passes through your pelvis ... I don't have small hips at all, and both my babies got stuck in my pelvis because my babies are too big for my body. My first was a natural birth with some complications like shoulder dystocia, broken clavicle and neuropathy damage. I was told a section would be best this time around but declined and tried natural, unfortunately the baby got stuck by his head and couldn't pass through my pelvis and I needed an emergency c section. My first was 6 oz bigger. I would shoot for a natural birth, I don't regret my decision (; !

    This.

My mother never weighed above 95lbs before getting pregnant with me, and is 5'0" on a good day.  My sister and i were both breech, so we were C-sections, but a specialist she saw recently told her that he didn't think she could have given birth even if we weren't breech.  her uterus is severely tilted though, so that might also have had something to do with it.

On the other hand, a close friend of mine is about 5'9" and a normal size 10-12 on the bottom.  her hips are completely average size.  No one mentioned thinking she'd have any issues delivering her kid.  And then she was in labor for 36 hours and it turns out that her hips just won't allow a baby out.  It's just the way she's built.  She laughed in the doctor's face when he told her.  She was like "you're telling me i've been walking around with this ass all these years for no reason???"  She still thinks it's insane, but it's the truth.  The baby would not move low enough and she needed a C-section.

I'd think this kind of issue would be really hard to diagnose prior to actually being in labor though.  i wouldn't sign up for a C just because it's possible that it won't work vaginally.  i'd probably want to give it a try vaginally as long as no other risks were present.
