1st Trimester

Baby measures small, bleeding and hemorrhage

I'm not going to lie. I am extremely concerned that we are going to lose our baby. My LMP was August 25, which would put me at 7 weeks, but I have been counting 8 weeks because my cycle was 23 days before, and I got a positive test at 23 days. I went in to the ER last night for bleeding (very light). They did an ultrasound and confirmed that I had a small hemorrhage next to the baby. What I am mostly concerned about though is I was only measuring about 6 weeks, then the tech said 6 to 7, so I'm not even sure. There was a heartbeat (150), but I am extremely worried because I have seen so many posts that people have the same problem and lose the baby a week later. My question for you is, how can I only be between 6 and 7 weeks if I had a positive test after 23 days? I know you can ovulate or implant late, but I actually had a positive test 23 days after my cycle started. So I should really be 8 weeks and I can't stop worrying about it.

Re: Baby measures small, bleeding and hemorrhage

  • It doesn't matter when u tested positive. Ur dating is dependant on lmp and of course the CRL and sac measurement. 150 is a great heart rate for where u are at. Also it's normal for dating to be off by a few days. Don't worry about the dating unless it's off by weeks.

  • I'm still kind of confused about the test being positive, especially since I used the cheap dollar store tests. Sure enough I got 4 positives at 23 days. It is my understanding that a test won't come up positive until your missed period if it is the cheap ones. So that would definitely put me 5 days ahead of dates from what I am getting based on the LMP. That means that we conceived and implanted 5 days ahead of time. So based on that, the baby is close to being 2 weeks small.

The cheap target brand digitals record at 25, which based on what people have said here means they're actually quite sensitive for the fact that they're cheap store brand tests.  The level on the packaging is the guarenteed level it will detect, it's possible to detect lower on some, they just don't guarentee it.

If your doctor wasn't concerned, I wouldn't be concerned.

I don't think ur understanding the point though- when u got ur positive is irrelevant in terms of dating ur pregnancy. Trust me on this.. dating is determined by lmp amd measurement of crl and sac... not when u got a positive hpt. Eta: u didn't "implant 5 days early" I'm actually not even 100% sure what u mean by that but either way u should trust ur doctor's dating abilities
  • First of all, it doesn't sound like you know when you ovulated. If you tested early enough, you may have caught a positive right as you implanted, maybe 7-8 DPO, which happens. If that's the case, you are probably about 7 weeks, which is consistent with what you were told.

  • Thank you sorarose. That is exactly what I wanted answered. I have always been told that you will not get a positive test until after your missed period, unless you get a more expensive test, so I was basically wondering if it was possible to get an early positive and why would that happen. I have always had really short cycles, so assumed I ovulated a lot sooner. I know that doctors base everything off LMP, but I have always been able to adjust my due dates based on shorter cycles, which is why I was so concerned. My 2 older children always measured a few days ahead, so this is extremely concerning to me. And trippledagger, just FYI, people ovulate at different times, and I am trying to explain my cycle lengths, which I don't think you understand, but I usually ovulate earlier in my cycle.

If it's any consolation, I got my BFP squinter at 8DPO (AF expected at 13 DPO). Based on my O date, I found out at 3 weeks 1 day. This was my first normal cycle in forever.

With my first pregnancy, I had no idea when I O'ed. 8 weeks past LMP, DS measured at 6 weeks and 10 weeks past LMP, 8 weeks. I do think it was a few days off because my beta was at 1,000 at what would have been 4 weeks and 2,000 at 4 weeks 2 days and DS always measured ahead from that point on, but just want to show you that LMP is not a determining factor and I wouldn't worry yet, especially with such a strong heartbeat.
Also, did they measure you with a transvaginal u/s?

  • I got a positive 4 days before my missed period with brand name and cheap test (dollar store). I was tracking my ovulation for some time so i can say i ovulated about 7 days before my positive test. My cycles were about 27/28 days. If you dont know when you ovulated and/or have irregular periods i can understand your confusion. Check with your doctor, the ER are not experts in OB. The heartbeat is strong. My baby's has remained 166 since week 8...which is not bad. Relax and speak to your doc. Best of luck!!
  • The cost of the pregnancy test doesn't have anything to do with how sensitive it is. A lot of the very cheap tests are highly sensitive. You should be able to find that info on the box or online. Here's one website that lists sensitivities of various brands: https://www.fertilityplus.com/faq/hpt.html

Just because you have short cycles doesn't mean you ovulate early. Your follicular phase can vary from cycle to cycle but your luteal phase will remain consistent. You may have a short luteal phase. For example, say you noticed that your cycles are usually 25 days. If your luteal phase is 10 days long then you were usually ovulating around day 14 or 15.

Did you chart your basal body temp or use OPK's? If not, then there's no way to know when you ovulated that cycle.

Try not to worry too much. From the info you provided I wouldn't be concerned. There's a strong heartbeat and some bleeding is not uncommon at this stage. ER docs are also notorious for instilling unnecessary fear in pregnant women. I would speak to your OB of course, but it sounds like a subchorionic hematoma which isn't something you should be overly concerned about.

  • Thank you Dusty! So, I actually don't have an SCH. My ultrasound tech told me it was more like an implantation bleed. I can't remember what she called it (peri- something), but she did say it had nothing to do with an SCH. So I am not concerned about that. If my phase is consistent though, is that permanently and does it matter if my other 2 kidd always measured 5 days ahead
  • Update today. I had my HCG measured. My doctor wouldn't tell me the numbers, but she said it didn't go up as much as she would like to see. I have an ultrasound in 4 days, but she told me it's early and gave me about a 50/50 chance of keeping the baby. I think not knowing and having to wait is just destroying me.
