How common is a missed miscarriage

Congrats everyone!  Cautiously excited about the next 8 months =)

Re: How common is a missed miscarriage

  • Sorry, that did not post the entire first paragraph of my post.  I had a MMC last year, baby passed at 8 weeks but did not discover until 10 weeks.  I have not experienced many symptoms so I'm worried about my US next week.  It seems like more often than not pregnancies end in MC.  I'm looking for ways to talk myself down using logic!

  • I also had a mmc in June, so I am in the same boat. I have to actively focus on being positive. I keep telling myself that right now I am pregnant and focus on that. I hope we both have a positive outcome this time around.
  • Surprisingly and thankfully they are not common at all! Of course, it doesn't help that we had it happen to us! I had a mmc at 10w, found out at 11 also in June. I read somewhere that less than 2% of pregnancies end in mmc. It may seem a lot more common because in these forums we all come together and bring up these discussions. I agree with PP, we are pregnant today and likely will be for the next 8 months!!

FYI-Also, it is even rarer to have it happen twice in a row!

  • I also experienced one this year, back in April. We are cautiously optimistic. I don't have many symptoms either, and it makes me nervous. I chose not to have an early ultrasound at 6 weeks and to go in at the usual 8 weeks instead. Praying we see a heartbeat. It was devastating not to. Wishing you a healthy pregnancy.

  • Thank you, ladies! There is something about knowing there are other people with the same thoughts & concerns that is comforting- we are all in it together- and have no control (yikes!).  I'll be thinking of you ladies daily!  Let's keep in touch.  My first US is scheduled for 11/4- I'll be 8 weeks.

  • The no symptoms is frustrating!  My husband thinks I'm nuts when I tell him I wish I would at least occasionally have MS!

  • I believe statistics show they are pretty uncommon. I agree with pp that it seems a bit more common because of the amount of traffic and discussions that get posted here. Good luck and happy and healthy 9.
  • I had one as well. Baby passed away at 9 weeks didn't notice until 11 weeks. I feel the same with this pregnancy. Very few symptoms , not even tired and I have three boys to look after. Mw spot isn't until 9 weeks and then hopefully an ultrasound after that.
  • I had one long before I met my husband-it's not recorded in my notes. I lost it at 8.5 weeks, but didn't find out until 12.5. It was the worst thing I've been through. Even now with 3 healthy babies, that fear is still present. We don't go public until after 12.5 weeks and a confirmed heartbeat. I understand your fears, too. Fingers crossed that all of these little beans will be take-home babies in June!

  • This is actually why I am so crazy about POAS. My biggest fear is finding out at the OB, and I would rather find out before so I can process it.

  • I'm new at this! I don't know what POAS is. I feel the exact same way though. I would rather have it happen at home and know what is happening then sitting there and finding out.

I had the exact same experience with my first pregnancy (missed miscarriage at 8 wks found out at 10) to give u hope, my doctor did say that most women who miscarriage their first time get pregnant very quickly the second time around and go to have healthy pregnancies. She advised me to continue taking folic acid and wait 3 months before TTC...got pregnant the first try then went on to have a healthy baby boy! I'm almost 8 weeks now with this one and so nervous! I hope we all have sticky babies this time around!!!

This! We had a MMC and went on to get pregnant very quickly and have a healthy two year old.

  • Thank you all for your posts. I have to keep telling myself the odds are much more in favor for a healthy baby than not. Glad there are forums like this for support and encouragement!

It happens. Unfortunately it just happened recently to my sister. She was 12 weeks when she found out that the baby had stopped growing at 8 weeks. She scheduled a d&e and it went very smoothly. But try to relax and remember that the odds are in your favor :)

  • I'm so sorry to hear that. I never realized how often it happened until I had one and people started opening up about it. My thoughts are with your sister

  • This is my constant worry, too. I think almost every mom I know has had a miscarriage and I keep worrying it's my "turn." Ugh. There's nothing to be gained by worrying about it, but it is tough not to. Here's hoping we all get to meet these little ones we're carrying!

  • Hi I have a question.....with a missed miscarriage would you still continue to get a positive pregnancy test?
  • With pretty much any miscarriage you will get a positive pee stick for a week or two after the miscarriage. Those things are super sensitive and all the HCG doesn't leave your system for a while. In my case it took about 3 weeks after I started bleeding heavily for me to stop turning pee sticks positive.
