My doc won't do another scan til 36 weeks. I will deliver via c-section though so maybe that's why? How big are they thinking baby will be? Is he leaning towards inducing early?

  • At 31w4d baby's estimated weight was 4 lbs 6oz so not too far off from you! I had to go because I had been measuring big at appointments. They didn't mention to me having to go back for more scans but I have a checkup on Friday so we will see.

  • I am a c section but I have weekly scans due to loosing a baby at 35weeks and 22weeks.my 35week baby was 3#15oz and her twin was 5#15oz.... Ihad my oldest daughter at 37weeks and she was 7#12oz
  • I had to be retested for diabetes and it was negative
  • At 32&6 baby was measuring 5 pounds 7oz. I was measuring four weeks ahead but baby was measuring 2+ weeks ahead.

  • The last measurement I got was at 20 weeks and he was just over 13oz. The doctor says that he's going to be a big boy. My next ultrasound isn't for another 2 1/2 weeks so we'll see then what they say.
  • I've had one so far at 26 weeks and they told me 75% at 2lbs 5oz. They were concerned about GD but I got my test results back a few days later and I passed with flying colors. I'm plus sized but I'm still down 14lbs from my pre-pregnancy weight and have only gained back 4lbs at this point anyway. I am not at all overeating, he's just big. It's going to be what it's going to be. I have another scan at 30 weeks and then one every 4 weeks thereafter.
  • I have GD, so I have multiple growth scans. My last one at 31+6 showed baby was 4 lbs, 14 oz. The MFM is pushing for a c-section if baby hits 9 lbs. My OB is fairly anti-section without just medical cause, so we'll see. I think I'll only agree to one if baby's abdomen grows bigger than her head. I'm taking the actual poundage with a grain of salt since it's an estimate.

  • My best friend was told her entire pregnancy that baby was measuring big. They also told her baby would be nine pounds at birth. Her baby was 6lbs 7 oz at delivery (four days late). Id take it all with a grain of salt.

Lots of people have nine pound plus babies naturally. I don't think that that should be used a determination for a c-section. Also, keep in mind that the abdomen is squishy and can get out...it is the babies with the big heads/shoulders that pose the most problems.
  • I have GD this pregnancy but not with my last.  My last baby was born at 39 weeks weighing 9 lbs 6 oz.  This baby is also measuring big.  My last scan was last week at 32 weeks and weighed in at 5 pounds.  Not measuring as far ahead as he was at my last scan 4 weeks prior.  Baby only gain 1 1/2 pounds in 4 weeks.  I was borderline GD with my numbers and they decided to have me check my sugars and I have only had a high number 3 times in 3 weeks.

Take it with a grain of salt.  Measurements can be off by quite a bit with growth scans.  I read an article that said the doctors that go by feel of the stomach and baby guess better than ultrasound measurements.

  • As long as she doesn't slow down her growth and follows her growth curve, I'm expecting a baby somewhere between 4.5 and 4.75 lbs at around 37 weeks (around when I'll likely be induced) I've had multiple growth scans that all show baby following the exact same curve on each one, so I'm fairly confident in the weight estimate too.

  • Ultrasound can be off by a pound. I was told my daughter at 34 weeks was 5lbs.  Three weeks later, she was born at 5.5 pounds.  As someone else said, grain of salt.

  • Not really worried if baby is large due to having a scheduled c section already due to priors but we shall see when baby makes his entrance November 30th how accurate or reliable the scans were.
  • I had an US two days ago at 33+1 and they said DD was 4lbs 5oz and her abdomen was in the 36th percentile... I found this odd considering I have GD, but my numbers are always good. I see my doctor tomorrow so I'll see what he has to say about it

I get growth scans every three weeks, at my last I was 31 weeks and they estimated 4lbs 1oz and 4lbs 2oz for my twins.  I'll have another scan this week, so we'll see what they say this time.

My baby was only measuring 1lb 12oz at 26wks 6 days, but everything was growing normally within him so I was told that I'm probably just going to have a small baby. Then we went back last Monday at 30wks 2 days and he had had a growth spurt and was 3lb 2oz. We were still told that we could just have a small baby. I was only 5lb 9oz when I was born (twin sister was 6lb 12oz) and my husband was 6lb 9oz. They want to do one more follow up scan in a month to check his growth again (getting monthly scans from a specialist due to placental issues). No estimation on delivery weight but I'm going with him being on the small side.

  • I got one today at 31 + 1 and they said she's in the 89th percentile at 4lb 9oz. She's been consistently measuring ahead the entire pregnancy so she might just be big. Big babies seem to run in my family, if that's even possible.

I'm not sure if it could be a contributing factor, but even though I passed the 3 hour diabetes test, one of my numbers was high and they suggested I start watching my carbs and sugar intake.

My US Tech said they keep records of estimates vs actual birth rate of the scans they do and they come in within a half pound accuracy.

  • I am supposedly "showing small" but measuring big per my midwife. The OB did a US at the last appointment and immediately asked me about a history of diabetes in my family (which is common in my family) so I am assuming he thought baby looked big on US. Anyway the midwife had refused to do a glucose tolerance test at 24 weeks so my OB had me check my blood sugar 6 times in one day since it is to late for the challenge to be accurate (31 weeks). Monitoring my blood sugar showed that I do not have GDM, all values were well within normal limits. I come from a tall family with big babies and I'd honestly be shocked if my child was below the 75th percentile...my brother was 10lbs something, I was 8lbs something (my niece and nephew were  both 75-95th percentile for height and weight and my SIL is short but my brother is super tall). Anyway, DH and I are both tall enough that I would expect our child to measure bigger just because of our children's genetic growth potential (I'm a dietitian and I have used this calculation at work for children who are outliers on the growth chart, it is an average of both parents height after correcting for gender and determines height within a margin or error of about 2 inches either way).

I think the acceptable margin or error for size on ultrasound is something like plus or minus 20%, which is statistically really shocking that they can even use data with that large of a range!
  • At 26 weeks and 4days the baby was 3pounds 9oz, and now at 33 weeks he is a little bit over 6pounds ...i'm honnestly a little bit scared to think about how much he is gonna weight at 39 weeks hahah
  • I'm 31 weeks 5 days and the doctor told me Wednesday that baby was measuring about 4 pounds. I'm very petite so this actually made my heart drop a little bit haha. I'm hoping we don't have to go past 38 weeks or his exit may not be big enough hahaha
  • Ended up having my scan yesterday at my appointment. 31w 5d and baby boy was measuring 5 pounds 5 oz. A little over 2 weeks ahead. My first was 8 pounds 3 oz a week early so I figured this one would probably be on the big side as well. If he gets to the same size as my first I'm going to ask to be induced. Had to get stitches last time around and hoping that doesn't happen again.
  • At 32 weeks my little girl measured at approx. 4lbs 9oz
  • My OB doesn't do another US unless there's cause. They just measure the belly & at my last appt I was 32w 4d & measuring @ 34w. She said that could just be the way the baby was laying b/c I don't appear very big. But if I'm bigger again next time they'll schedule another ultrasound & see how everything is going in there. But we make big babies in my family, so I'm expecting an 8 pounder at least & hoping it just stays below 9, as that's when they start urging the section.

I've also heard that US weight estimates can be 2 lbs off, so I wouldn't worry about it too much at this stage. But I will say that most women I know who's OBs were talking about baby's weight that early in pregnancy were very c-section focused. So, unless they are worried about GD with you, I wonder if that's your OBs bent.
