Anatomy scan

I had my anatomy scan at the maternal fetal medicine specialist today. I'm 17w4d. Everything measured perfectly except for the heart which wasn't as defined as the doctor would like it to be. He said it's hard to get great images of the heart at this stage so don't worry and he will check up in 4 weeks. Baby is a girl (I knew before this - panorama) and is 8oz!

Just curious... why did your doctor do the anatomy scan so early?

Not OP but I think the MFM doctors do them early because they're checking for other things. Last pregnancy my MFM doctor did mine at 17 weeks, but it wasn't to find out the sex. It was because she was concerned with the growth of the baby so was taking loads of measurements and just happened to to see the sex while she was checking measurements. It was the only good thing about being high risk. Tons and tons of free detailed scans!

I'm having mine done at 17 weeks as well . I had to have a heart exam scan with my second child just because they were looking at the brain and the heart because of a previous sids baby there was a small mass on the babies brain but turned out to be ok and she's fine with my 3rd child they watched close too and now with this one they are as well because I had a blood clot right up against the baby before and now again but this time is isn't as big and so far doing good last one burst and took the baby with it . I agree Its nice having extra scans and attention but sucks having to worry so much too . I'm jealous of the people who found out soo early what they were having but I was afraid to do any exams I didn't have to do too . to be honest if it was a downs baby or had something wrong with it in anyway I would have it anyway I think so I didn't want to risk anything happening like another miscarriage I bet it is nicer knowing that everything is ok tho . I guess it's good and bad on both ends of those .

Same. I have one set at 15.5 weeks and another one at 21 weeks. Probably depends on provider and what is covered through insurance.

@NachosAndPeaches I didn't say ultrasound risks a miscarriage and I don't know what mc is miscarriage?

Ok @NachosAndPeaches. I didn't clairify sorry pregnancy brain here . I meant that test that others did to find out early on if anything was wrong with baby and found out what the sex was in the process it wasn't a required test so I didn't take it I was saying that I don't want to risk having tests that aren't necessary because I've had problems in the past and that if it turned out to be a downs baby or had anything wrong with it I'd keep it anyway so for me the test didn't matter but I was jealous others found out so early what they were having .

The test is literally a blood test on mom. No risk.

Hey all! I had mine at 17 weeks because l am high risk. The maternal fetal medicine specialists are doctors that focus on high risk cases. I have autoimmune disease that may affect the baby so I see them often and they do scans each time. At this point I am getting US done every 2-3 weeks. Their technology is also more advanced (because the preform procedures on the fetus if necessary) and they can see in more detail at 17 weeks than most OBGYN at 20 weeks.
