GTKY: Your Favorite Holiday Tradition

Ok so I want to know, what is your all time favorite holiday tradition?!

-----------------------------------------------

I love the holidays in general - my family celebrates Thanksgiving and Christmas. This time of year just makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside :x
Growing up, my mom always made a huge deal out of the holidays. It was always about family, holiday music would always be playing, we'd have days dedicated to making homemade perogies and cookies, cocoa by the fire etc. All that good stuff.

I think my two favorite traditions would have to be:

1. Taking the whole family out to a Christmas tree farm, picking out the perfect tree and cutting it down ourselves. H and I have continued this tradition in our own family since we've been married.

2. Going to my parents on Christmas Eve, spending the night with the family/playing games/etc, and waking up super early Christmas morning to open gifts around the tree by the fire. And yes, my sister and I STILL get up at the buttcrack of dawn on Christmas morning (like 6am). And I make H do it now too :)

Re: GTKY: Your Favorite Holiday Tradition

  • Love this!

My family are decorators for all big holidays (Halloween - Labor Day) so I love helping mom set up the hundreds of little pieces to her Christmas town. I love to bake and plan the cookie exchanges with coworkers. Our big family spends Christmas Eve together and Christmas Day apart, so Christmas Eve dinner is always tamales, enchiladas, beans and rice. Oddly enough, sweets are cookies and pies. Lol. I think I'm going to try my hand at making tres leches cake this year. My own little tradition is getting one new ornament for the tree and this year it's snowman couple expecting.

My favorite is definitely going to hunt the perfect tree. We bring it home and my mom would play music, and make us her homemade hot chocolate as well all decorate it together. DH and I do this as well

I also love Christmas cookie baking day!

And lastly Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Every Christmas Eve we go to church come home and open up one present ( it's always pjs to wear to open up gifts in ) and then me waking up so early going through my stocking and getting everyone else up early to open gifts!
  • Mine would be baking Christmas cookies for sure.  Growing up it was a whole day with my mom that we all looked forward to every year.  I will be doing this will my daughter probably starting this year (she's just over 1).

  • Oh I love holiday traditions! I adore Christmas and I can't wait to celebrate with my family in California this year. DD will be one--so she'll be old enough to probably somewhat unwrap her presents, haha.

One of my favorite traditions in my family is that we open all our presents one by one, taking turns opening them. I have a big family so it can actually take hours to open them all, especially now that some of my siblings are married and have children. I was really glad when I got married to find out that DH had this tradition in his family as well, so he's happy to carry it on with our kids.

  • We have quite a few. The day after thanksgiving we go to our dear friends house for "Nerdsgiving" all the yummy thanksgiving leftovers. On Christmas Eve we start at my parents for appetizers and presents then go to the same friends house cause his birthday is on Christmas so we wait till midnight and all the kids and him open their presents!!
  • My favorites are:

Going to the pumpkin patch/apple orchard one Saturday in October.

Decorating the house the day after Thanksgiving. We always have a yummy breakfast on our Christmas plates and drink out of our Christmas mugs and put on a Christmas movie while putting up the tree.

When my sister and I block out an entire day before Christmas and she comes over to bake cookies with me all day long.

Christmas Day is busy but so wonderful. We wake up early to have our Christmas here, then to my parents' for brunch and presents, then to DH's grandma's, then back to my parents' for dinner. So much food and love! I'm really looking forward to it this year bc DH has a new church job this year and doesn't have to play Christmas morning mass!

  • @emucolemanwe do the same thing for gift opening - we wake up early, everyone is in their pjs and the first thing to be opened is all the stockings. Then someone passes out all the gifts and we go around one by one opening until everyone is done. It takes forever, but I love it!

@FutureMrsCAF we just did our annual apple orchard and pumpkin trip last Saturday! And we also decorate the day after Thanksgiving as well. I love this time of year.

Plus we'll be announcing the good news to the rest of H's extended family at Thanksgiving (my entire family already knows), so it should be extra exciting!
  • Cooking with my mother for all holiday meals is my favorite thing to do.

The only official Christmas tradition we have is going to look at holiday decorations on Christmas Eve. We broke with tradition on the meal and now go with whatever strikes our fancy that year (ribeyes, tamales, brisket, lobster...).

My favorite Thanksgiving tradition that I cannot partake on this year is my sisters and I bringing various expensive beers to the Thanksgiving meal and trying them all. Even after so many years, a mere mention of "Voodoo Doughnut beer" brings shudders to us all.

  • We never really had Thanksgiving traditions (just lots of food and family), but my brother decided one year that nobody was allowed to drink Great Lake's Christmas Ale (we're from Cleveland and we seriously wait all year for this stuff) until Santa showed up in the Macy's parade.  Now every year, we toast each other with Christmas Ale at about 11:30am!  This year, I'll be toasting with water and that's how we're announcing it to my family!

I love decorating for Christmas the day after Thanksgiving.  My Dad's family is Polish and we have a big 7-course meal on Christmas Eve with all of them (about 40 people in all), which is a chaotic mess and so much fun.  Even when we don't go to Christmas Eve at my grandpa's house (we split holidays), we still eat it at some point with my parents!

  • Love Christmas! Some of my favorites are
    1. Getting the Christmas tree the weekend after thanksgiving
    2. Christmas Eve dinner with black bean soup
    3. Christmas books and movies and songs
    4. Our community Christmas tree lighting
    5. Every year I host an old fashioned cookie exchange.

  • @Kballew10 whoop whoop! I'm from the Cleveland area too! I've never really been into Christmas Ale, but I know it's always a big deal when the first keg is tapped!

  • @FutureMrsCAF - Sadly, one of the first things DH said to me when I showed him the BFP was "So, no Christmas Ale for you this year." It will be worth it, obviously, but I'm seriously considering saving one bottle of it for Christmas in July!

  • I love this post.... getting so excited for Thanksgiving and Christmas

DH works in retail so he hasn't been home for Thanksgiving in years- over a decade.  Which means I get to go to my family and we switch back and forth for Christmas.  Because retail stores are now open all day on Thanksgiving- and he's in a regional position- he's schedule isn't as strict this year so he gets his first Thanksgiving in over a decade.  I am worried that I won't be able to stomach being in a house with that many food smells.  So I'm playing this year by ear.  I may still go to my aunts house and give my younger cousin (freshman in college) a gobble til you wobble wine glass- since she will have to be doing my wine drinking this year.  It's still going to be too early to announce- so I'll have to tell everyone we are still TTC or I'm sick or something.

For Xmas we have so many traditions- that I cannot wait to pass on to the baby.
    1) We drive around and look at Christmas Lights.  There was a house we always went to in Queens that was covered in lights- hopefully we will find a great house in Jersey to go to this year.
    2) We go into the city and do the horrible touristy stuff and then go to Little Italy for dinner.
    3) Making Christmas cookies.  I have been giving my grandmothers homemade cookies for xmas everyday for the past decade (struggling college students have to make gift- plus Grandmas downsize so they don't need any more stuff).  I loved making cookies with my mom growing up and can't wait to have little helping hands.

  • I love all things Christmas, I was raised Jewish tho stopped practicing pretty young. My parents weren't very religious. My husband is Catholic so I'm like a little kid when it comes to Christmas, love all the eating, cooking, tree decorating, opening stockings Xmas eve, everyone wearing matching jammies (always a gift from his parents;), opening presents, church, just love all the tradition and family time. My family joined in last year which was very cool.
