Never using Desitin again!

I feel horrible! My 6 week old DD just started getting some diaper rash on her bum from pooping so much. I started using Aquaphor and while it seemed to coat her rash well and provide her some comfort, it didn't seem to be getting any better so I figured I'd try the Desitin. Big mistake! My poor baby started screaming in pain as soon as I started to put it on! I figured it was probably just from me touching it until I realized the more I put on, the more she cried and screamed. I immediately grabbed wipes and started wiping it off! Once it was off I held her diaper free and just cuddled her so hard! I feel so guilty!!! I was crying as I was wiping it off and was apologizing to her! Once the Desitin was off, she stopped crying and as I held her I could just feel her body relax. Once I cuddled her diaper free for a bit and let everything air out, I put on some Aquaphor and she was perfectly fine when I was applying that.

I don't post much on here but I had to post about this in hopes of saving another LO from going through the pain my baby just went through!

Re: Never using Desitin again!

  • Yikes!! I'm so sorry you and LO went through this. My son has had diaper rash a couple of times and I haven't ever used desitin thankfully. I highly recommend a&d ointment if you find that your LO is prone to them. And thank you for the warning!

  • So sorry to hear that! My cousin recommended we use boudreaux's butt paste. We haven't had a chance to use it yet, but she swears by it.
  • I had the exact same experience only it was with the Honest Company diaper rash cream - my 6 week old screamed for almost 2 hours - it literally burned her sore butt since there was already a small rash there. We immediately wiped it off and put her in the bath, that stopped the pain but the minute we got her out of the tub it began burning again. Finally a nurse told us to put Vaseline on there, it worked instantly and baby was great after that but to this day I still think of it daily and I'm so upset over it - watching her scream in agony was HORRIFIC.
  • Poor baby.Maybe it was an allergic reaction? I use Honest Co. Organic Healing Balm for everything. It takes away any rash with in like 1 day. Even my MIL who is super old school and all about Johnson and Johnson products, could not get over how great that stuff is!
  • I highly recommend babyganics soothing protective ointment, it works wonders!
  • Burt's Bees makes an awesome cream to powder for diaper rash. My LO really hasn't even had any diaper rash as I put it on as soon as I notice any redness and it's usually gone in 1-2 applications. Sorry your baby went through this, and thank you for the tip!
  • Aww that's horrible. I guess you never know how baby will react. I have A&D, Beadreux's Butt Paste and Desitin on hand but have only used Desitin. It clears up any redness right away and my LO isn't bothered by it.
  • Highly recommend using balmex. It's a bit pricier but definitely cures a rash over night!
  • You have to watch products that contain sunflower oil as I was told babies are sensitive to it. But yea we just finished the diaper rash spell and I felt aweful for my lull man and I changed him hourly and it still happened! But letting babies lady naked to dry out works great too. I just put a dry washcloth over the hose to prevent big mess. .lol
  • Oh poor babies. Must have been an allergic reaction.
For the most part we use coconut oil after every diaper change. And only had a problem once with a rash. To fix it we used honest co. Healing balm with great success.
    Every baby butt is different.
  • So sorry to hear that! My cousin recommended we use boudreaux's butt paste. We haven't had a chance to use it yet, but she swears by it.

This is what we use ... Boudreaux's Natural Butt Paste. Worked great and cleared up his rash in two days!
  • Thank you all so much! Before I had posted this, I called her pediatrician to see what else I could do and they said it could be a yeast infection so they called in a steroid anti fungal cream. I'm applying that and then a&ad ointment on top of that (which they recommended)
I feel so bad for her! Between the last 4 days, we've been to the pediatrician twice and the hospital 3 times. She's been having feeding issues since she was born and had a scare of pyloric stenosis and surgery. Thank goodness it wasn't that and it was just a certain formula she needs bc she couldn't keep my breast milk or 3 other types of formula down. She finally seems happy with eating and seems to be doing good and then she gets this :(
  • We've used Boudreaux's Butt Paste, Burt's Bees, and Desitin pretty interchangeably, With no issues so far.
  • I use sudocrem for my LO and so far it's the best one I've tried.
