Tips for pelvic pain from baby dropping?

Hey ladies! I'm 36 weeks and LO dropped about a week and a half ago. Since he's dropped, I've been having more and more pain in my pelvis as he puts more pressure there. Today the pain was really bad to the point where it was difficult to move. I didn't really sleep last night because I was so uncomfortable and rolling from side to side hurt.

Do any of you have any tips for what I can do to take away some of the pain/discomfort? these 4 weeks are going to be awfully rough if I can't get some relief!

I'm planning on talking to my midwife at my appointment Tuesday but if you have any tips to help me out until then, I'd appreciate it!

Re: Tips for pelvic pain from baby dropping?

  • Do you have a birthing ball/exercise ball? I got one a few weeks ago, and I've found it's really helpful with my pelvic pain and back pain. I just looked up some simple exercises on youtube for it.

  • I do and I've used it a few times. It helps while I'm on it but the pain returns within minutes of getting off the ball.
  • I haven't found much that helps.  Tylenol will take the edge off, not walking too much helps.  My pain has shifted this week from my entire crotch to moving closer to my butt.  My doctor said it's from my pelvis spreading and there isn't much to be done about it short of taking real pain killers, which I am not about to do.  I have iced it before bed and that seems to help a little too.  Sorry you are dealing with it, I've had it since about 30 weeks and it sucks something major.

  • I could be completely off on this one, but maybe a support band would help? The midwife I saw Friday had the nurse give me one to take some weight off of my pelvis, but our little guy hasn't dropped yet so I'm not sure if that makes a difference. Just a thought, and maybe something you would like to ask your provider about?
  • I know how you feel. It hurts so bad at night I just want to cry. I have found that if I sleep with my legs spread apart it helps a little.
  • I second the yoga ball and ice. It's really the only thing that's been helping me and my ob had very little to say as far as suggesting anything. I find that the less times I go up and down my stairs, the better, and not walking too fast makes for better days
  • Mine just ramped up in the last week too. I've heard that the maternity support band, yoga ball, etc all help as well. I was on my feet a LOT yesterday working a wedding and I would have died without the support band. Staying off my feet as much as possible seems to help too.
  • I've been taking hot baths which help a little bit, but nothing helps a whole lot. I'm sorry you're going through it, it sucks so bad! My LO is pretty low as well. Sleeping on your side with a pillow between your upper thighs helps me
  • I've had it since week 18 and there are good days and bad days. Recently. I've taken to doing two poses on my hands and knees that have helped. One is the cat cow yoga stretch, and the other is just lowering my belly as far as I can between my legs to stretch my lower back and give my hips some release. I also lay on my side and push my knees together. Sometimes I get a pop that helps to realign things, and I can definitely feel my hips moving apart from each other. It's never 100% better, but it does make life a little easier.

  • Thanks ladies! He's not putting as much pressure on my pelvis today so I'm thinking yesterday might have just been a bad day. But I will definitely try some of these tips.

I don't have a support band (and I was hesitant about getting one because I'm cheap on only have 4 weeks left), but if it helps the pain, i think it'd be money well spent. November 14th can't get here fast enough!
  • Had it so bad with both pregnancies my OB suggested physical therapy this time. It was a life saver. I no longer feel like my pelvis is fractured. I also sleep with a pillow between my knees and keep my knees together when getting out of bed.
  • Go swimming when it gets really bad! Being weightless is an amazing feeling this far along :)
The pain will likely return shortly after getting out, but while you're in it, it's great!

I found one on Amazon for $13.99, and it has helped a lot when I'm walking around.  https://www.amazon.com/Bracoo-Breathable-Abdominal-Maternity-Support/dp/B009LA4VOG/
  • Okay, I didn't want to start a whole new thread as this one covers the gist of my question.

But for all you mamas who use birthing balls at the moment and spend time on them. How long would you say you're using them for each day? Little bursts or long periods? I can not for the life of me remember what I did with My other two. I've been sitting on it in the evenings for 40 mins and then my back hurts and I give up!
  • I roll around on my ball for as long as I feel comfortable doing it. When I'm doing my hips it will be while watching a TV show. When I'm stretching out my back or leaning over it to help take tension off my stomach then usually in shorter spurts. But I like to stretch out everything when I do my hips watching tv at night.
  • Lying on your side with a pillow between your legs, especially a thicker one like the Snoogle. It helps ease the pain, but it never goes away. Mine was already bad and then my doctor just stripped my membranes yesterday so now it completely kills.
  • @mamavbs I stay on the ball as long as I can periodically throughout the day when I'm not being too lazy. Laying down hurts me a lot (especially when I try rolling from side to side)...

When I just want to sit and not be on the ball, I will often sit on the edge of the sofa with my legs spread so my belly is pointing slightly down. That seems to help.

I spent hours bouncing and rolling on my ball last pregnancy, but this time I'm like you - I'll stay on until my back aches then I'll move.
I've found it really comfortable to get on my knees and lean forwards onto the ball with my arms crossed (and my head on my arms) then I can slowly rock back and forth whilst leaning on the ball. No pelvic relief but I like how it stretches my back.
  • Haha @mamavbs I like your way of thinking! Just a heads up - my 2yo thinks it's great fun to try to climb on mummy when I'm in that position, and an elbow to the spine does not help with lower back pain!
  • I bought the same bracco band on Amazon, it has definitely helped with the pelvic/lower abdominal pressure and lower back pain.

Noted... Il wait til the kids are in bed!
  • Another birthing ball related question: Are any of you planning on bringing yours to the hospital?  How logistically are you doing that?  I was thinking of getting one for back pain and labor but I wasn't sure how to bring it with me to the hospital. Do you just deflate it and bring a pump? Do I need to buy a pump when I buy a ball?  Sorry if this sounds obvious...

My hospital has them. You may want to call ahead and see if they have any at the hospital first. If you have to bring your own, you can buy one off Amazon and most have a pump with it (I'd look for one with a foot pump rather than a hand pump since it'll inflate faster)
  • I didn't read all the comments but I've found that having my DH rub and put pressure on my hips while I'm laying on my side helps.. He did that today.. It's def rough at night and in the morning.. My Chiro has been my lifesaver too so def make an appointment asap!! Good luck.

My hospital has a small supply of birth balls. When my daughter was born they were all being used. Luckily we had ours in the car and I had my hubby go get it. He just carried it in already inflated.

Yes, you need a pump to blow it up. Some come with them. You'll have to read the box.
