Night time nanny?

Hello new mothers,
I recently gave birth to my first baby - now 3 weeks. I love her to death but DH and I have had a tough time with nights and being up with DD almost every 2 hours and taking 1 hour with each feed to put her back to sleep (which gives 1 hour of sleep in between). We have started to take shifts and sleep in separate rooms to maximize how much sleep we each can get. This staggered sleeping pattern in combination with some PP blues has been really tough on us and our relationship as well. Has anyone ever considered or had any experience with a nighttime nanny maybe once or twice a week to assist in catching up on sleep and sanity??

Re: Night time nanny?

  • I haven't given birth yet but I've been given the number of a night nanny in my area that my sister-in-law used. She had her come 2-3 nights a week just to give her a chance to catch up and breathe- I think if you feel like you could benefit and you can afford it, I say go for it!

  • Going home from the hospital tomorrow and il thinking about hiring someone too, a few nights a week for a few weeks. Let me know how it goes if you do!
  • Two of my friends had great experiences with night nurses. Go for it if it makes your life better! Question - are you nursing? That's the only thing I couldn't really figure out if we had a night nurse. I'd still have to get up to nurse or pump.

  • From what I read if your are nursing they will wake you up to nurse and take the baby from your to change diaper and put back to sleep. I am pumping and plan to still wake up to pump but she will have pre-pumped milk to give to the baby at night.
My biggest nightmare is either she sleeps through the baby crying or looks over things like diaper changes since its "night time". I guess that's why you really have to research the person you are hiring since you are inviting them into such a personal space and personal time of day. I just figured to ask if anyone else has done this so I know what to look for in a night nanny and what to expect. We have a nursery with a pull out bed and separate bathroom for her so it works out space wise.
I definitely think it'll help to catch up on rest and personal time with DH once or twice a week!
  • Oh I don't expect her to sleep while she's here. The night nanny I met with sits and reads, or knits (she kinda reminded me of Angela Lansbury). She said I have two options for feeding- she can wake me up to feed, and then I go right back to sleep while she changes/soothes, or she will give bottle of pumped milk. You still want to pump during the night to keep up supply but you don't have to do it at the same time as she's feeding baby (unless you express better looking at baby). She was clear that she could be very unobtrusive to your night if you really need space, or she could be more of an assistance to your night regimen. Mine also helps sleep train and/or can assist you in getting your baby to sleep longer through the night. I would never think she'd sleep thru a diaper or skip something- you want to look for someone who is going to care for your child attentively while you sleep.
  • Thanks for insight - I would love for night nanny to help train !! I'll start my search now... Hopefully learn to feel comfortable with someone else in my home while I'm sleeping, lol
  • This sounds amazing!!! I wish!
