Heartbeat on Doppler???

Hello. I am 318 pounds, 12 almost 13 weeks along and I bought a at home Doppler and am not hearing anything (I'm not surprised I didn't think I would) I just got to thinking. When I have my OB appointment in a couple days, if they can't hear the heartbeat on there Doppler will they do an ultrasound???

Re: Heartbeat on Doppler???

  • i dont personally have any experience with this because i dont have a doppler & my OB has always found the heartbeat. however, at 12 weeks he did have to spend some time searching around for it.

if they cant find a heartbeat at all i have a feeling they probably would do an ultrasound. i would want my OB to do one anyways, just to make sure everything is okay. good luck! try not to worry too much (:

  • My midwife had tried at 3 separate appointments to find the heartbeat (11, 14, and 18 weeks) and couldn't, so I got ultrasounds after each. My last pregnancy ended in a loss, so I'm very anxious, and she's being very generous with the scans.
  • I would say they will probably do an ultrasound. I am average size and couldn't find the heartbeat on the Doppler until almost 14 weeks so try not to worry. I have heard that size is a factor too.

  • Your OB will be much more adept at using the doppler, and will likely have a medical grade doppler that can pick up the heartbeat easier than an at-home one.  But I can only imagine that if they have trouble, they will do an ultrasound.  Good luck at your upcoming appointment!

  • I answered this in detail in the exact same post you put in the first trimester board .
  • So, a home Doppler is typically not as strong as the Doppler that the OB will have. That being said, I am also slightly on the heavier side and I have been able to find my baby at home on my Doppler. Try having a really full bladder, laying on the floor and tilting your pelvis up off the floor. (Almost like a butt bridge) Then, place the probe below your belly bulge (pannus) just barely above your pubic bone, in the center of your body, and angle the Doppler down towards your tail bone. I recommend slowly changing angles of the Doppler to see if you can pick anything up. If not, slowly move the Doppler to one side of your pubic bone and then the other. At times my little one is hiding, but with a ton of patience....I have found her each time. Especially with a full bladder. Good luck!
  • My doctor wasn't able to hear a heartbeat until 16 weeks! And he didn't order an ultrasound or anything. But in Vancouver it's a bit different with the access to ultrasounds.

  • My OB couldn't find the heartbeat on the doppler at 12 weeks so she brought in the ultrasound machine right then and there.

At 16 weeks she found it right away! ( I am a little overweight myself just FTR)
  • Mine wasn't heard right away for a while. The first few apts they did an ultrasound and found it right away.
