Postpartum Anxiety and Breastfeeding (X-Post)

I need some advice with the ladies who have suffered from PPA and breastfed. My doctor diagnosed me with PPA yesterday and I am going back to see her to talk about medications this afternoon. I was curious if anyone here has been through this and was still able to breastfeed? I never experienced this with my first.

Re: Postpartum Anxiety and Breastfeeding (X-Post)

  • I think that there are meds that can be taken while breastfeeding. Prozac is prescribed for anxiety and depression and is safe during breastfeeding.
My doctor just prescribed me Prozac. I hadn't yet decided whether I would continue to pump so that's why she prescribed it. I have decided to switch to formula though but will be weaning more gradually.
I was diagnosed with post partum anxiety and depression with my anxiety mostly linked to the stress I am having over how much I hate pumping. It wasn't what I expected but it's what I need to do. I was making myself so sick that I could barely function and care for my baby.

  • I took Celexa, or the generic, citalopram for ppa with my first and breastfed the entire time. I only needed it for 6 months to reset my chemicals, was also in therapy part of that time, and it worked great. Good luck!

  • I'm currently on zoloft for my anxiety and have taken it my entire pregnancy, my psychiatrist and midwife are okay with me being on it and breastfeeding, and are encouraging me to breastfeed over using formula.

  • Thank you so much for this ladies. I am either going to go to emerge if I can't fall asleep again tonight or I am going to wait for my counselling session on Friday.
