Anyone Else...?

...Have a high pain tolerance and is worried that they won't really be able to feel the beginning of the contractions? FTM and it's been on my mind for a while now.

Geez 8! I didn't feel them at first, I was induced with DD and when she hooked me up to the machine she asked if I felt any contractions, I said no, she said I had 2 since hooking me up. I was definitely feeling them the further I got

Everyone keeps telling me that I will know, but now you have me worried...

I'm the type of person who's waited 2 days with a fracture before going to hospital because it 'didn't hurt that bad'. If I don't make it to hospital I'll know why :)
  • I've been wondering this!! I have 8+ fractures in both legs from sport all that healed on there own and I didn't know about them until I had an X-ray later on down the track! I don't want to go to the toilet and my baby falls out!
  • If you can get thru the first half of labour at home then that's good we don't go to the hospital here untill your in full on labour may as well enjoy being at home u will know when to go on the strength of your contractions and how close together theyr getting I very much doubt anyone can get thru a whole labour without knowing it's time to go so sorry but unless your think the movies r real and u sneeze and ya baby falls out there won't be any babies born on the toilet unless u wait to long to get to the hospital
  • @Ceridwen77 that's the word I couldn't place! Yes I meant threshold.

@laura&brad1 my mother actually didn't feel her contractions until I was already crowning. Maybe it helped that I was coming out bag and all but we have a very similar threshold so it's got me a little worried.
  • Echoing what others have said, I have high pain tolerance, but I definitely knew I was having contractions.
  • Can I just say how jealous I am already? I'm the complete opposite and am nervous I'll start screaming for drugs the minute they start! :)
  • I too have a high pain threshold and for me the gold standard is if I can sleep through it it's not that bad. Early contractions for me feel like Braxton Hicks but they come much more frequently and the tightness in my tummy makes it hard to talk because it gets difficult to breathe. My point in telling you all this is your body will let you know but you definitely gotta be paying attention!
  • I had some serious cramping yesterday morning, and was so worried that they were actual labor pains that I had just been sucking up. Turned out not to be labor, but it has me wondering now if I will be one of those ladies that doesn't know until almost too late!
  • I don't think high pain threshold or tolerance has anything to do with it. Everyone's contractions feel different. I can handle pain way better than my sister yet her labors and deliveries were way "easier" to handle than mine.

My sister believes because she set her mind out to believe they weren't going to be bad that they weren't. So apparently I wasn't capable of doing this. I would seriously love to give her my short intense labors with contractions literally 10 seconds apart within the first hour. I WISH I could be one of those women who could have conversations while in labor and be like oh hey the head just came out....
  • I am a STM but in this regard feel like a FTM since my water broke the first time and I was induced. My labor was fast and IMHO not terrible. I didn't have an epidural and things were fine until like 9.5cm.

Because I tolerated it so "well" and have been having excessive amounts of BH, I am concerned I will miss the early cues too. I understand what you're saying and have the same concerns OP! Even if they are ridiculous. Time will tell ;)

PS: My SIL was one of those people who did have her daughter on the toilet. So it does happen lol. Rare... But it can!
  • DH and I were discussing this last night. I'm known for "brushing off" pains that most ppl would rush to an ER for. I haven't had any BH contractions yet so I'm a little worried. Every time I get a twinge I write it down in my phone. It might be gas or baby but I figure it's best to keep track so I might notice a pattern. Although everyone I have spoken to said "don't worry you will know."
  • Definitely scared of this! I also have a high pain tolerance and my hospital is an hour away!
  • No offense, but I think y'all are crazy. I'll be interested to see if any of you end up not feeling your contractions.

I'm definitely preparing myself for the worst. I'm hoping us FTM will remember to revive this thread after our experience :)
  • I think that even if your contractions aren't necessarily painful to you, you should still be able to tell that something is happening to your body.  While it may not physically hurt, it will feel substantially different than what you've been experiencing - maybe in terms of tightness, rhythm, breathing patterns, or whatever.  Painful or not, you should know.  ;)
  • You'll no I have aa high pain tolerance and once you get too 6 centimeters you'll feel the prusser you'll no.

"You know I have a high pain tolerance, but once you get to 6 centimeters you'll feel the pressure. You'll know"

    I'm sorry- is this correct?
I don't think anyone else bothered parsing it :)

I didn't feel the contractions with my first daughter. We went to the hospital because I kept getting the urge to pee and being down right uncomfortable and I knew something was up. I also didn't feel the bh when I was pregnant with her.

    ^^ this.

  • I think it's kind of funny when people insist "oh, you'll know." Sure, most likely we will all know. But there are absolutely women who don't realize it. So just because your experience with contractions was impossible to confuse for something else doesn't mean that others will have the same experience as you. We are all different afterall. And even each pregnancy and labor is different.

I'm not so much worried that I won't recognize contractions, but moreso that I won't think it's actually the real deal until way later than I should, just because I've been experiencing bouts of contractions for so long that eventually fizzle into nothing.
  • Well I am wondering because I havent felt contractions yet. I felt a few weird pains, but if I touch my belly it is still the same, so I guess it was more ligaments/joints, or weird baby kicks, or pressures... we are all so different how the f**** will we know if it is really happening !!!!! *not panicking*

  • With my first I never had Braxton hicks and I have them this time. They feel (to me) like what contractions felt like after my water broke and I was 2 cm dilated. But once in labor you will know. I mean there are other symptoms besides contractions. You'll have the bloody show, your digestive system might start to clean itself out, you could be nauseous, you'll know something is different, contractions may start to feel like you need to poop, etc.

    Yes lol
  • It's definitely a strange phenomenon. I don't like pain & would def opt for the epideral but the last time I was hooked up to machines and in labor I could see the contractions on the machine but didn't actually feel anything until I got to be 3-4 cm dilated. Of course after that I felt all of the big contractions. Would be nice not to feel those either though lol

    Proof reading works wonders.

My mom had a lot of BH in the last couple of months and mistook both of her actual labors for BH.  My sister and I were both born within three hours of her arriving at the hospital for scheduled inductions because she was already actively laboring when she went in.  So yeah, there are definitely people who don't realize they've gone into labor.  My mom was one of them.  It's not very common, though.
