Getting through the day at work...

How do you do it?  Every day feels interminable.  Obviously, I know I won't actually die of fatigue and morning sickness, and I've survived working while pregnant twice before...but wowsers.  One of the docs I work with just told me I look exhausted and unwell this morning...I blamed it on the house guests I have at home right now (which truthfully isn't helping, but it was arranged before I found out I was pregnant).

Thankfully, my kids are 8 & 10, so relatively self-sufficient.  I've been in bed EARLY - 8 o'clock last night, but wake up repeatedly throughout the night with nausea.  And work.  Oh work.  The commute, the patients, the computer, the phones.  I drink loads of seltzer, and have been sipping snapple for a little caffeine boost (can't stomach coffee), which helps a bit.

Any other tips?

I was recently told by a doctor that if nausea and vomiting get bad to start reducing your sugar intake. Maybe you could switch to green tea with honey instead of Snapple? When I heard this I almost cried! I love ginger ale for stomach upset. Try to eat little meals before you get hungry too. Hang in there!!

It's actually diet Snapple - I can't stomach sugary drinks even when not pregnant.  I know artificial sweeteners aren't the best thing either, but better than collapsing, I guess.
I'm definitely trying to eat frequently.  Thank God I'm in New York, and there's a good bagel place next to my office...plain bagels are about the only thing appealing right now...

I've actually heard it's when your blood sugar gets too low that MS is worse!
  • I just want to go home. This is worse than being sick at work. The sheer exhaustion is making it hard to do anything. Plus the commute, oh my.
Are my fingers supposed to do this typing thing? Because it's not happening. I'll just vent on the bump instead.

I have no idea how you moms with littles at the house do it. I'm done with life by the time I get home. I can't imagine needing to care for someone else. Luckily DH is self-sufficient and lets me sleep.

MY LIFE. I came into work late today for the first time since I've had this severe fatigue/exhaustion. I actually feel worse than when I make myself come in on time.

Edited because I'm not sure what I meant at first
  • I second that. All of it. Between my hour-long commute to work, and then actually working, I'm useless by the time I even get to work.

    I am
actually contemplating going into the nursing mothers room at my office and taking a nap. I am one of very few women here, and there is only one other pregnant woman. There are a small handful of ladies here that know I'm pregnant and have actually told me to take a nap in there if I need to.

I may actually take their advice for once and do it. And I won't even feel guilty about it.
  • I've been getting by with ginger breath mints, ginger tea and lots of little snacks. I basically pack my fridge when I head to work. If you can't handle coffee, maybe chai tea? I did that one day when I ran out and it worked wonders, especially if you throw in some cream and a couple extra slices of ginger. It comes caffeinated and decaf.

I wish I had a room I could nap in. Or more than 1/2 an hr for lunch so I could eat and nap.

Do it.  I would in a second.  We used to have an exam room in our office suite that I could have locked and nodded off, but no more...

Please nap. Nap for us all. I could almost get away with it since I have an office that locks, but someone always knocks whenever I close my door. It never fails. We do have a hidden lactation room that only 1 person is using right now, but I'm not sure what her pumping schedule is.
  • Do it @mrsschmity!

I haven't told anyone at work. All the women my age don't want kids and think they are evil and would ruin their life. And everyone else has kids that are basically out of the house already. weird dynamic.

I am so looking forward to my mom being here this weekend. We are telling them then and I know she will cook something Cajun for me and let me sleep. :)

Ok, I'll do it. After I choke down what I can of my boring, plain turkey and cheese wrap (and after my next meeting, ugh) I will take one for the team and go take a cat nap for all of us.

    It's happening.

*ETA I just realized how many times I used the word "actually" in my original comment. Uffda.

    UFFDA!! Yessssss!!!

    Sorry, I'm from Minnesota :)

Carry on with your napping selves!
  • Yes, getting through the work day is becoming torturous. I cried when my alarm went off this morning.  It's quite pathetic really.  And I am moving this weekend, so I know it'll be crazy busy.  My mom is coming to help, and I can not wait to see her!  I don't know if it's just because of my situation, but is anyone else missing their mom like crazy?  I've lived hours away from my mom since I graduated from college, so I'm used to it,  But the last few weeks, I've wanted nothing more than to be with her.

Anyway, I am seriously contemplating taking Monday off so I can recover from moving all weekend.  I just absolutely hate using my sick days.

I'm completely hiding from my mom, because I haven't told her yet.  I live across the street from my brother & his family, and a 5 minute walk from my parents...I don't want to tell family under we're engaged (he's bought the ring, so any. day. now.).  And hiding it is REALLY tough.  My mom pops in all the time & caught me in my robe at 11 am on my day off...
"Are you still in bed? Are you ok?"
um... not in bed...oh, I'm fine...
I was just doing paperwork?  In my robe?

And not drinking wine is a dead giveaway.  I always have wine with dinner.  And the kids are starting to think something is weird - why no coffee, mom?  Don't you want wine?  You look tired, mommy...

Can't wait to tell family, it will make life so much easier, and a little tea & sympathy never hurts!!!
  • @rosehip15 have you tried the "FRE" wine by sutterhome? Its alcohol free! I'm planning to pour it into a regular wine bottle so that my family doesn't call me out on not drinking until we tell them!

  • I coach high school color guard twice a week, for 2 1/2 hours a practice. Not even close to a full-time job. I should be able to handle that, right?! But today, I have already taken a 2 hour nap and I still can't make myself get off the couch. Practice may be cancelled tonight. This fatigue thing is way worse than I remember with my DD!

Of course, I now chase a 2 year old all day... That's probably a contributing factor... #sotired

No!  I'll try it!  Is it sold in the regular liquor store?
  • It is in NJ yes! https://www.frewines.com/

  • @amangels2 I miss my mom so much!! I'm seeing her this weekend and all I want to do is lay in the couch and watch lifetime movies with her. #bigbaby
  • I hear all of this! I am so tired and work days just seem to drag on. We had an event on Monday where I had to walk across campus 4 times and stand for 5 hours straight. I was so exhausted I thought I wouldn't make it home. Not being able to tell anyone is hard too.

On top of pregnancy exhaustion we went into our busy season, and my coworker left right before I got pregnant so I am doing 2 peoples jobs and trying not to freak out or fall asleep.....I can't wait for December, sigh.

I am from (and currently live in) Minnesota also. Ya sure you betcha :)
  • Update: The napping has just ended. And it was glorious. 30 minutes of uninterrupted sleep in a dark room. I was dumb and forgot to set an alarm - I thought I would just shut my eyes and not actually sleep. I jolted myself awake literally one minute before my next meeting. started.

I napped for the rest of you too...anybody feel refreshed yet? I don't.
  • @mrsschmity: Way to go! It seems you have especially fabulous timing wth an internal alarm :) Although that's a freaking stressful way to wake up, I'm sure, haha.

Thanks for napping for the group--I think I'm about to pick up where you left off. Involuntarily. In my chair. I-)
  • @crdo you think I would have learned by now that I should never trust myself when I say "I don't need to set an alarm". I always need to set an alarm. I got lucky this time!
  • @crdo if I put my chair in the right position I can rest my eyes without anyone seeing me. I napped for 30 minutes last week. Shutting my door would just be obvious that I'm not working :)
  • @mrsschmity: Haha, maybe you should by a lottery ticket today?

I'm usually one to be so conscious of an alarm coming that I don't actually sleep, I just doze in little snatches. No bueno. No one wins.

    @kor121: Nice! I like it.

I work from home, so the only indication I'm not working would be if my IM status indicator changes to "away". So theoretically I *could* nap undisturbed, but then I'd just wake up behind on my work. Hmph.
  • Plain bagels are my life right now! Seriously the only thing that I can tolerate.
  • Bagels are just about the only thing I can eat that doesn't make me feel like I'm gonna hurl.
  • I worked while pregnant with my first. I worked at a staffing company and did interviews all day long. I had to stop interviews to run to the bathroom to throw up. I've also thrown up in random peoples bushes on the way to work. I'm now a SAHM and coffee makes me sick most days. It's rough. Hang in there. For most people the exhaustion and nausea will pass.

  • I teach high school and am on my feet all day long.  I'm completely and utterly exhausted by the time I get home.  I just sit on the couch until its bed time (which is super early now).  My poor husband has been doing all the housework and cooks at night. I feel so useless around the house, but he says he understands.  At work, I get so thirsty.  I drink water like crazy, which makes me pee like crazy too.  Only I'm locked into the teaching schedule and only get a 6 minute passing period every 45 minutes.  I have to run to the bathroom, refill my water, and get a snack during that time before my next class.  I'm hungry ALL THE TIME.  Its insane.  I hate working when I feel like this.  I just want to crawl into my bed and ignore life for awhile.  Ugh.
