Baby food!

So we're gonna wait til lo is 6 months to introduce solids which is next month, even though we already got the okay from the pedi at 4 months so I'm just wondering what type of brand of food and how much is everyone's baby eating and how much breastmilk is incorporated in babies diet. I would like to make all baby's food but Im just being real and know that that'll probably last a few weeks lol.

Re: Baby food!

  • My babies 5 month soon to be six. I started purée's at 4 months. I started with avocados, banana, peas, apples, pears and sweet potatoes. He loves all of it. I make it myself and honestly it's super quick and easy. Look into the baby bullet. I make huge batch freeze them. As I run out I pop them out the freezer.

  • Baby bullet is so easy...we've done avocado, sweet potato, banana, butternut squash and pears so far. I'll likely buy some premise stuff eventually to have on hand for emergencies, outings, etc., but since we're just going slow for now, making is working great. I pump breast milk specifically for adding to the food. Otherwise he's still on an every 2 hours during the day and every 3-4 hours at night between feelings (EBF). I hope once he starts eating more he'll be spacing out his nursing. I nurse before the solids.

This is pretty close to what we do, but my almost 6mo DD bottle feeds breastmilk during the day, nurse at night (I work 9-5). We've only done food on the weekends, and have encountered a reluctance to poop afterward.
:-/ she loves anything that comes off the spoon though! We've done quinoa cereal, avocado, and sweet potatoes and shes taken to them all. I didn't think I was going to be able to make my own, it's been pretty easy so far. I'll probably buy a few jars to have on hand when it's just not happening but so far so good.
  • How do you guys warm up the baby food after it has been in the freezer?
  • I thaw it in the fridge either overnight or through the day then if it's still in the container I'll run it under warm water to warm it up. I don't microwave just because I use breast milk in it and I've heard microwaving can destroy some of the nutrients. So most of the food he eats is usually just room temperature.
  • You should nurse/bottle feed as usual and offer the foods as an 'add on' at this point to be sure they're getting all of the nutrition they need.
  • I don't mix breast milk to make the food and I use a steamer to defrost the food. Once it cools, I mix in cereal or breast milk depending on if the food needs to be thinner or thicker.
  • I've been giving my 5 month old solids every night at 6:30pm. She eats a jar of veggies- sweet potato, carrots, or butternut squash and a serving of baby cereal. She went through a container of rice and oat cereal and last night we started barley. The orange veggie & cereal and starting at 5 months was based on my dr's green light and advice. Tomorrow she turns 6 months and I'm going to start branching out with the veggies that I offer her.

You are supposed to nurse them first and then offer solids after as a snack. My dr never told me that but I knew it already. However, I have to say that I don't personally always do this depending on her nap schedule. Sometimes, I nurse her at 6pm, solids at 6:30, bath and jammies/stories at 7, then nurse again at 7:30. Sometimes I skip the 6pm nurse if her last nursing session was later in the afternoon. This has worked for her and for us so I'm just going with it. So far solids is having no negative effect on nursing (that I'm aware of) and I buy the 'add water' cereal, not the type that you add breast milk or formula to.

We wanted to make our own baby food and still plan to soon but this phase it's so easy and convenient to buy the jars of already pureed, strained, portioned, watered food. I currently buy "presidents choice organics' from Shoppers drug mart (I'm Canadian) but I'm going to switch to Earth's Best from Whole Foods soon when we move close to a Whole Foods because, shockingly, it's less expensive.

I was excited too. But it's messy!!! LOL And it adds a lot more work to your day. I still like it though, it gives me another 'activity' to do with her to keep us busy.
