STM+: Preferred breast pump?

I searched, but could only seem to find questions about insurance regarding breast pumps. I'm trying to decide which will work best for me when I return to school/work, and am wondering what pumps other mamas have had good experiences with! I am specifically looking at an evenflo and a medela now, but would appreciate any more suggestions.

Re: STM+: Preferred breast pump?

  • With my first two I was working and loved my medela pump in style. The only issue was that it was loud and that milk got backed up in the tubing here and there (eventually ruining the motor). This round my doctor recommended the Spectra S2. I have no used it yet, but it has great reviews.

  • I also used Medela Pump In Style with DD. I pumped exclusively for a year and had no problems. This time I upgraded to the hands free one.
  • I pumped for 15 months with my Medela Pump in Style and had no issues.

What's the hands free one @cdeggleston? I haven't heard of that.
  • I used the medela pump in style as well. If you can upgrade to the hands free I would. My friend used it and loved it. The pump is really small and runs off batteries. It's easier to get up and grab something if you needed to than the pump in style.
  • I think the hands free one they're referring to is the medela freestyle. I highly recommend it! Especially if you can pay a little more to upgrade through your insurance, or if you have to pay out of pocket the price difference isn't too much I don't think. Worth every penny!

  • Medela pump in style advanced!
  • Yes - the freestyle! I paid a little extra to upgrade what was covered by insurance.
  • I never was successful with electric pumps so I used manual breast pump. It takes a little more time but it worked for me.
  • I love my Medela pump in style also. I pumped for over a year with it. I was looking at the Medela and the other brand that begins with an "a" (cannot remember right now, but is was supposed to be a closed system) before i had DS. The reason I chose the Medela is because the parts were easy to find, target and babies r us carried them. The other band I could only find a couple places online to get replacement parts.

  • We're doing the Medela pump in style (probably advanced) I used a medela brand with my DD and it was a charm.
  • I used the Medela Pump in Style Advanced with DS2 and ordered another through my insurance this time. I used my first pump every work day, three times a day for 14 months and never had any problems! My
original pump actually still works, I just ordered the one through my insurance since it's free so I could have it on hand just in case!

  • Another vote for the Medela Pump in Style Advanced. It's what my insurance covered, but what I would have chosen anyway. I exclusively pumped for a year so it got a lot of use and held up well. Like pp mentioned too, all the replacement parts are very easy to find. Pump still works, but ordered another one through insurance just in case it decides to give out sometime in the next year.
  • While I am a ftm, my sister works for a medical supply company and her responsibility is breast pumps. Without a doubt, she says madela is the best hands down.
  • I had an Ameda with my first 2, because I wanted a closed system pump. I went with the Spectra this time. Both were highly recommended by my LC, over the Medela.
  • Madela!! I don't know what the style I use is but it's the double pump and not the cheap one or the most expensive.

@LauraK33 the milk shouldn't be going into the tubing part, I've gotten condensation in mine but not milk. I pumped for a year and would replace the tubing at least twice.

I also know you can but a pumping bra to use with the double pump to make it hands free :)
  • Thanks for the input, ladies! I ordered the pump in style advanced through my insurance today(:
