FTM - PCOs and breastfeeding (or other worries about not being able to BF)

I am really hoping to breastfeed once LO gets here.  The concern I have is that I may not have enough granular tissue to be able to BF due to my PCOs.  I talked to my doctor, sort of fishing, for answers and if they could predict my inability to actually BF if there was one.  There didn't seem to be any sort of test other than a try and see once she gets here.
I have a BF class with a lactation consultant in a couple weeks where I might get answers but wondered if any other STMs had similar concerns their first time and advice.  I think I'm mostly concerned that LO gets here and they attempt to have me BF and NOTHING comes out.

I have PCOS and while it takes a little longer for my milk to come in, I have successfully BF (or at least pumped and bottle fed expressed milk exclusively) with each of my LOs. My DD2 was born on 10/14 and I have been pumping and bottle feeding her and have over 50 ounces of milk frozen.
When your LO is born they can only eat 5-8 ml at a time and colostrum is so nutrient packed that a very little quantity at a time is all your LO will need.
Good luck and be confident in your mommy abilities and know that no matter BF or formula, your LO will be amazing!

Edited because complete sentences are hard these days.

That is a little reassuring considering things I've read over PCOs and BF. :)
  • Just do what your body will allow. If it's not possible and you would still like baby to have breast milk look into a breast milk bank. Good luck!!
  • I have PCOS and conceived my first on Clomid. I tried to breastfeed for 2 weeks and did not produce.
BUT 5 months after DS was born I conceived my DD naturally! I'm due in 11 days and am hopeful and will try hardest for BF this go round as well :) Just do all you can, try your hardest and know that no matter what happens it is what is meant to be. And all will be ok. DS is strong and healthy from Formula.
  • I'm a FTM so I'm unsure of how breastfeeding will go with this LO but I have PCOS and have been heavily leaking/producing colostrum since about 16 weeks so I am hopeful I won't have any production problems. My mom, who also has PCOS, breastfed my brother and I each for 6 months with no problems. I hope this helps.

Oh my goodness, me too, basically exactly: leaking started at about 16 weeks, and I have pcos! I leak so much it's obnoxious! But if I don't leak for a day or two, I get a blocked duct. I've already had a minor infection around my ducts and I'm only 35 weeks.

Also, OP, my sister has PCOS, too, and she had twins with clomid, and breast fed them for more than a year, so I would recommend not stressing, it's definitely possible to successfully breast feed with PCOS. I hope you can, I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!
  • Honestly didn't even know this could be an issue. I've BF both my sons completely fine and I've got PCOS.

  • I am also a PCOSer. I BF my first (conceived with clomid) for a year and plan to for this little one as well.
  • I have a good friend who has PCOS and she breastfed her twins with no problems for 9 months- at which time she decided to stop- definitely no production problems there!
  • Do you have a breast pump yet? I was told by a relative to bring mine to the hospital, that was how she got milk to come in. I don't have PCOS so i can't help you with that, but I'm worried also about BF due to my size and hormones so I'm bringing the pump with me.
  • I have PCOS and have been leaking since the first trimester.  Especially when I'm at work with the babies, my chest will ache and I would leak a bit.  As the pregnancy has progressed it's now an everyday occurrence.

The lactation consultant that led the breastfeeding classes here said that PCOS can impact breastfeeding in a number of ways, and that you won't know until after delivery if you will have an oversupply or undersupply.  She said some of her moms with PCOS will have breastmilk spraying from them while others struggle to produce.  Fingers crossed that none of us will struggle :)

  • I have PCOS and BF DD up until my milk dried up during this pregnancy (she was 20 months) without any supply issues at all. Good luck!
  • Oh and I never leaked or had milk come in early during my first pregnancy, I was worried I wouldn't be able to BF but everything worked just fine.
  • I have PCOS and didn't know this was a thing until now. Trying to stay calm about it. My only symptoms of PCOS have ever been acne and trouble ovulating. Hopefully that means my risk of trouble producing is a little lower.
  • I didn't realize there were so many PCOSers on the Nov15 board! Thanks ladies for sharing your experiences, hopefully I'll relax and not stress.
