Quitting work early and not coming back

I’m 5 weeks 3 days with my first and need some work advice!

I was planning on quitting my job to work for myself from home in a more relaxed sense, and now that I’m pregnant, it’s an even better reason why I need to start my own business.

I was planning on walking in day 1 of 2016 and giving 4 weeks notice, but now that I received my BFP I’m thinking I’ll need to give notice earlier, as once I tell my friends and family, it’s hard to keep it a secret from my employer (we’re a very close office).

I’m going to tell my employer I’m pregnant next Wednesday, as I plan on breaking the news to family and friends then as I live away from everyone now and I’m visiting over that weekend.

I’m one of only 4 staff members, and I feel bad for leaving my employer, so I’m trying to figure out when I should tell her I’m leaving early, and not coming back. My plan was also to tell her that I’m finishing up December/January to work for myself before I’m due. That gives her 8/10 weeks to find a replacement.

I have a few questions I’d like fellow Bumpers to help me with:

A)     Should I go back to work after the Christmas break or just finish up end of January? I would only be doing it to get 1 extra full-time paycheck under my belt… But I’m also just hating being at work here…

B)      Should I be giving my employer that much notice? Or should I just tell her I’m pregnant, then tell her later “here is my 4 weeks notice?”

Thanks in advance !!

  • I'd personally finish working at Christmas and not go back next year. One less W-2 to deal with the following year!

As far and how much notice you plan on giving... I think it depends on the relationship you have, the relationship you want to continue having and how essential your job is. My only thought with telling them early is they could decline your notice and dismiss you that day or week.

  • I would wait to give notice unless you are positive that they would let you stay on and still treat you well after the notice is given. I know when I gave my two weeks notice at my FT job to work from home with my oldest there were a lot of hard feelings from some of my coworkers. I wouldn't have wanted to put up with that for 2-3 months.

  • Thanks girls! All food for thought. I totally don't want to go back after Christmas but then I always think about the pay check! My own wellbeing is probably worth more though!!

Yes, it's another paycheck but it's only one. It's really not a lot when all is said and done.

Oh and if they don't pay out your unused sick/vacation time make sure you use that before you put in your notice!

  • I am not sure what benefits you have through your current employee in terms of 401k or profit sharing, but also look into that.  Depending on starts dates and the plan, you could be walking out on thousands of dollars by not finishing out a year.

As for when to tell, I think 4 weeks is plenty of time.

Congrats!   Hope this journey goes well for you.

  • I'm in the exact same boat as you. Unfortunatley I told my employer I was pregnant back in August with my first pregnancy (I didn't quit yet), which resulted in a Mc soon after. Needless to say I'm still at work and don't plan on telling my boss im pregnant and leaving until after the hoidays so I can use the last of my vacation up. Hoping to give 4 weeks notice after that. Also hoping this one sticks, god willing. So far so good. All in all do what's best for you, and i think 4 weeks is plenty of time. Good luck!!
