Genetic testing??

Doc asked me today if I wanted to do genetic testing at 10w. I can't remember if we did it last time or not. TBH, I haven't researched any of it yet -- I haven't had the time. I was just thinking about it. I think I read last time around that there are some risks associated?? Is it bad that if a big part of why I want to do it is bc they'd tell me if I was having a boy or a girl? #terribleperson

    If its one of the cell free fetal DNA tests there is no immediate risk to the baby since its just a blood draw. However, they do a false positive rate of around 5% (I think, I could be wrong) which could elicit further testing that is more invasive so it really is a toss up in the end.

    We did it last time because my OB kinda pressured us in to it saying it is better for the birth to know if there will be any "issues" with the baby that they need to have special people on hand for. I know in my last pregnancy a lot of people needed a second test because there were issues identified. I assume because I had it last time I won't need it this time but not sure I will bother either way.

    At 10 weeks it's most likely a low risk blood draw. In my area usually only people who are high risk or over 40 get it done. I never have. Not all US insurances cover it, so that might be something to check (I'm not sure where you live).

    I believe it's around $150-200 if your insurance doesn't cover the test and it's not a very "sexy" way to find out the sex IMO. I'd rather go out to dinner (a few times) and wait 10ish more weeks to find out.

    I did Panorama with my first and will do Verifi with this pregnancy. I am 32 and not high risk but it gave me such piece if mind. Totally worth the $200 for Panorama or $99 for Verifi IMO.

    You're right, it's not sexy. And the point of the anatomy scan is to make sure all of the oragans are in working order. Just like with genetic testing, finding out the sex is just an added benefit. I guess in my head it seems more meaningful finding out when you at least see a picture of LO rather than a nurse reading it off a paper.

    In this sense I suppose finding out when LO is actually born is the "sexiest" way and we all know giving birth is probably the least sexy thing, ever!

    I agree we did it last time because I would be 36 when I delivered. My insirance did decide to cover it. I will do it this time as well, I will be 37 when I deliver.

    I did not need a second test for my first all of my numbers were great

    We had the office send us our results (after the told us everything was normal). That way we opened it together and found out the sex at home. We had planned to do a more exciting gender reveal/surprise with our whole family but we couldn't handle waiting. Regardless, it was a really fun and intimate way to find out the sex. Finding out the sex is just a bonus, the genetic screening info is the reason to do or not do the testing.

    @likeabel @little_bren We had the nurse write it I a card I provided. Then since our daughter was conceived in Greece, we went to our favorite Greek restaurant and opened it after a wonderful meal. It was wonderful!! And very sexy
