Health insurance 2016 question - what kind do I need for a newborn?

Hi all,

I’m not sure what type of private health plan I need to select for the open 2016 enrollment. My wife's due date is next April 2016.

Should I select a family plan for my wife and I now, then after my baby is born pick a new family plan that will cover the baby?

For newborns should I pick the best one available such as a PPO?

From what I know, and I'm not an expert, babies are covered under mom's insurance for the first 30 days, then they can be added to whatever insurance the family has. Even though it wasn't open enrollment at the time, I was able to add a new child to my health plan after that 30 days was up. I have a PPO and I cover my husband and 2 children as well as myself. There are a ton of well child checks in the first year so make sure insurance covers those (most insurance plans do).

Also, if you have a hospital or Pediatrician in mind that you will want, make sure they take whatever insurance you are signing up for.

Also, if you have a doctor that you really like, call the office and see what types of insurance they accept.

For now you will just need to cover you and your wife. You will have 30 days after the birth to add baby to your plan even if it isn't open enrollment (because it's a qualified life status change).

I would get whatever type of plan covers more - there are a ton of expenses that come with pregnancy and birth and the less you have to pay out of pocket for those, the better!
