2nd trimester beach vacation?

Before we found out that we were pregnant, H and I were planning to go somewhere in the Carribbean/Mexico this winter. We have a ton of hotel points from our wedding that expire next fall and so we want to make the most of them. Originally, I thought it would be no big deal to go to Mexico or a Carribean island sometime between week 17 and 23, but now I'm having second thoughts as I think about a long flight, the risks of food poisoning, using so much sunscreen, etc. What if something goes wrong and I have to be treated by foreign doctors.

We are want to book soon.Any mamas have any words of advice about a beach vacation in the 2nd trimester? Am I just being paranoid?

Re: 2nd trimester beach vacation?

  • I say go, relax, and have a great time! Nothing to worry about. There are safe sunscreens to use during pregnancy. Drink lots of water on the flight. Enjoy!

  • Traveling in the 2nd trimester is perfectly safe.  I'm heading to China for two weeks in my first trimester.  Only drink bottled water that was not bottled locally, no raw vegetables/fruit unless they can be peeled, and avoid food from street vendors.  I've been to Mexico City, Cancun, and Playa del Carmen.  There are lots of touristy areas where you don't have to worry about food poisoning.  With respect to potentially being treated by a foreign doctor, in the event of an emergency, as long as you visit a reputable hospital, the doctors in that region are perfectly fine and will be capable of treating you.  I understand the nerves and the apprehension, but most people take their "baby moons" during that time frame, so I would encourage you to go for it.
  • It's easier on your pregnant body to fly than drive because you can actually walk around. I think the biggest negatives of a beach baby moon are you most likely won't be able to lay on your back on the beach and might need to walk to the bathroom a lot! Go and have fun!!

  • Go! I went on trips that time during my last two pregnancies, one was a Florida vacation and there is nothing better than floating around in the pool!

Oh I didn't think about that! I will have to sit the whole time? Can I lay on a chair that's reclining?

The biggest negative for me will be no pina coladas on the beach, but I guess I can make do with the NA versions :-)

You can do what ever you want! But, as you get bigger, your uterus will get heavier so when you lay or recline on your back, it will actually pinch a nerve and slow blood flow in your spine. So you just won't be very comfortable. That's why they suggest sleeping on your side. You can still lay on your side (but your butt is in the air - awkward!) or sit in the pool!

    Oh the joys of pregnancy!

  • I went to Jamaica at 16 weeks. It was a blast. Go have a babymoon!
  • GO! It's a babymoon! We went to Mexico when I was 23 weeks pregnant with DS for 12 days. It was great to get out of the cold and just relax! My only suggestion is to maybe do a resort on the smaller side. We did a TON of walking to dinner, shows, bars (for hubby and friends), etc. every night and I get hot easily. Relax, float in the pool and enjoy!!! I agree with others that flying is way better than driving!

We have a cruise booked for this February, so I'll be about 23 weeks again while traveling. I'm sooo looking forward to it. (Even with an 8 month old.)
  • I went dude ranching at 24 weeks last time and I was fine. Went horse riding, ate and chilled out by the pool. You will be glad you get this time to relax while you still have energy and feel good.

    DO IT!

  • Umm yeah- GO!!! FOR GOODNESS SAKES ENJOY YOUR HUSBAND. ALONE. ON AN EXOTIC BEACH!!!!! It will be a perfect time preggo-wise around those weeks.
  • Absolutely, go for it! I went on a cruise when I was 18 weeks with my first. It was an 8 day cruise to FL, Bahamas and a private island. I had a blast. I just drank extra water and stayed away from any unknown food. Halfway through the trip, there was a bug going around so I just washed my hands extra stayed on the islands and in the fresh air as much as possible and was totally fine.

  • Go! My husband and I went to St. Martin when I was 25 weeks with my DD. Enjoy yourself! Relax! Lay on the beach, drink virgin cocktails and eat all the wonderful food. Once baby gets here, the opportunity for beach vacations get fewer and farther between.
  • You will really enjoy travel time in your 2nd tri... Enjoy it!

I just want to stress the importance of ensuring that you stay safe in what you drink and eat!  Coming down with sicknesses in those locations is a real possibility.

I have done a lot of traveling while pregnant.  With my first, we sailed in the Caribbean.  I was extremely cautious about the water I drank and the food we ate (and knowing where it came from).  This holds true down to the ice in your drink!

Have fun.  But stay safe :-)
