Infertility

Scared- Nurse just called and putting me on meds after ER to prevent Ovarian Hyperstimulation?

Hi guys- anyone been in this situation? Have retrieval tomorrow for first IVF and the nurse called after my blood work this morning to say shes putting me on meds to "prevent" ovarian over stimulation that I will be taking for 8 days beginning tomorrow night. Has anyone else had these type of meds? Am I out of luck for a live embryo transfer this month? Help me understand what to expect.

  • @smitty18 did they tell you what medication they will be giving you? My retrieval is on Monday but My doctor is putting me on Lupron for the same fear. I am also very concerned that I won't be able to do a fresh transfer but no one has mentioned that yet I have only read about it from other people in the same situation on this board.

  • I took something (I think medrol?) for the week after ER. I don't know the exact reason, but I think it was to help prevent ohss as I was high risk. I still had a fresh transfer. It's could they are being cautious and I wouldn't count yourself out yet! Make sure you rest and drink lots of electrolyte enhanced water after ER, especially if they take >20 eggs. GL!

Thanks for replying so quickly ladies @HBamama2B and @villacis811 I really appreciate the support as we all know how alone we can feel through each trial and tribulation this fertility road brings!!!! I just picked up the RX and its for cabergoline for the treatment of high prolactin levels. Does this sound familiar? I'm certainly swelling in my midsection is very tender where I gave myself my injections last night :( Bright side is lots of eggs i guess! @villacis811 I have been on Lupron since day one of injections. So idk! I'll be sure to drink lots of Gatorade @HBamama2B thanks for the advice!

I was put on lupron, and I made sure to take it easy and stay SUPER hydrated after retrieval. I drank smart water and gatoraide as well. I still got OHSS but just mildly, so it wasn't very uncomfortable (about as uncomfortable as when I was taking my stim meds and super bloated). The doctor did discuss with me the option of doing a frozen transfer because ohss can get worse if you get pregnant, and he explained it could be very uncomfortable and may need to have fluid drained. I decided since it was mild, and I'm already used to pain due to my endometriosis, I was willing to take the chance. But I made sure to stay hydrated. Everything turned out fine for me.

    Good luck!
  • I just had my ER wed 10/20...I was given Cabergoline as well. I had 28 eggs taken out. I can say the first few days was rough just very bloated....I am not in pain but just have a bit of fluid in my abdomin. Have my transfer tomorrow we will see if they go through with it. Nurse told me as long as I wan't having difficulty urinating, vommitting, trouble breathing and in serious pain it would be ok. Just stinks because I can't wear normal clothes and do as much. Trying to rest, walk a bit, eat lots of eggs, drink gatorade/oj/v8. Fingers crossed for you!
  • @picare88 I'm sorry I didn't see this post first! Good luck tomorrow. I always believe that doctors are motivated by achieving positive outcomes so I am very hopeful for you for tomorrow. Keep me posted. How many are you transferring? Drinking Gatorade as I type lol. @beckihall good to hear! Thanks for the advice. Did you end up doing a live transfer?
  • @smitty18 I did end up doing a fresh transfer, but I read up on frozen transfers abs they have amazing success rates. So it's not the worst thing if that has to be the route you go. Best of luck!
  • Just had my live transfer today....had acupuncture before and after...a little anxious about this whole thing. Im exhausted and feel sick when I think back what I went through.
    @smitty18 how are you doing?
  • @beckihall thanks for the positivity! I am learning that there is a new lump or bump in the road almost every day, but despite the mild OHSS, I am on track for a live transfer on Friday!

@picare88 Good luck to you. How many did you transfer? When is your first blood test?

I know! This whole thing is so emotionally and mentally exhausting, not to mention the physical drain.  I am ok- went back to work  monday, but could have stood to stay home. I'm still swollen and my pants are unbuttoned at my desk. (That's something I only thought i'd have to worry about when i got pregnant!) I had to take Tylenol + for about 48 hours, so not fun overall.  But Friday's my big day!
  • @smitty18 ET 2 on Monday with 6 frozen. Feel a bit emotional over this whole process...feel so bloated and fat...need to think postively but all the emotions and stress of this whole process hit me like a ton of bricks...
  • @picare88 good for you! I'll be thinking of you on Monday! I am an emotional wreck.  I cried yesterday in my boss's office and I cried later that day to a casual friend who just asked me how I was doing!

I will say the bloating has gone down significantly since Sunday. pants are back buttoned today lol.

It's a ton of stress and emotions. every day brings a new challenge or stress! I'm crossing my fingers that your embryos stick! There's nothing more you can do except keep stress low, be healthy and think positively.  Every day that goes by your 2ww is one day closer to being done!
  • I took that too, for 8 days. Had 23 eggs retrieved and no OHSS.
