Diaper Sizes

At this point, we are still in newborn diapers. LO is probably about 9.5 lbs. They seem to be getting small. The one I just took off of her left lots of marks from the elastic. I went to put a Size 1 on her and it seems it may be too big. Is there a good way to tell other than leaks? If we are in between sizes, what can we do?

Re: Diaper Sizes

  • We go to the next size once diapers leak a lot. The next size up always seems a little big, but it's better than having a blow out!! Lol

  • Nb are usually till 8 lb. Then 1s are 8 to 14 lbs. My hospital never put him in nb we had 1s til we got home. We just went from 1 to 2s because he's 12 + at 8 weeks and for a whole week his wet diapers were soo full expanded I'm surprised we didn't have leaks. Also we ran out of 1s lol the 2s seem a little long but I know he'll fit better soon. He's in th 70 plus percentile of everything.
  • Lurking from Oct 15 (Ds was born Sept 30 so I like to see what's to come on this board). My Lo 4 weeks old tomorrow and we switched to 1's (I would guess he around 9.5lbs, weighed 8.2 at 2 weeks). Some brands are smaller than others. We were passed down many brands of diapers and found honest to run smaller than pampers so we are using those now. We switched because I kept seeing marks on his legs in the newborn size.

My son was also born September 30. He weighed 8.3 lbs at birth and was 8.9 lbs by his first appointment. Our nurse recommended size 1 from the beginning due to volume. I would focus on volume to avoid leakage.

We move up a size whenever there doesn't seem to be enough material on the sides to close them. Our boy is 13 lb 12 oz now (8 weeks) and just moved up to size 2. We could have moved up earlier but wanted to use up our size 1's. Size 1 was a bit big when we moved up from newborn size but we didn't have any problems with leaks. Just make sure you close them up tight.
  • Thanks ladies! We will probably switch to size 1s today. I can't believe she's to that point! Growing up too fast
  • If it's too long, you can fold the top down a little and secure it with the sticky tabs. Also, Kirkland makes a 1/2 size for when you are ready to transition between 1 and 2.

It's always good to have a pack of the next size up in the beginning, just in case. They grow so fast that first 6-12 months!
