Room temp with a new baby

Our apartment is one zone heating, at night we typically have the heat set at 65 as my husband and I tend to like it a bit colder at night. However I'm wondering if that would be too cold for LO who will be in a onsie/sleeper and swaddled or in a sleep sack. Is there an ideal room temp that is recommended? Is 65 too cold? Coming from an environment that's 98 degrees usually has me worried, lol. We live in New England if that helps. Thanks in advance for helping out a crazy FTM.

  • We are in NE also and we kept it about 65 at night when we had DS (born in October). He was fine. We had him in a fleece sleeper and a fleece swaddler when it was really cold. If he is fussy at night you can try turning it up a few degrees to see if that helps.

  • I live in northern mn and we keep our house on the hotter side when we had our babies in the winter months. I would say we had our temp at 68 all the time unless it felt cooler then we would up the temp alittle bit. Also, if it got cold our babies would cry and if it wasn't a diaper or feeding we figured it was the temp.

I would play it by ear once u have baby and you can feel how he/she reacts.

  • I just googled it for you and the ideal temperature for a newborn through 1 yr is 68-72. Any hotter and the risk of SIDS goes up. 65 might be fine if you keep them bundled a bit. I kept mine at 70 but my baby was in onsies.
  • Also just one other thought on this.... 65 can feel different based on the insulation in the home (drafts can make it seem colder), or how close u r to the heat source. With only one zone, I am guessing some rooms may be hotter or cooler then other.
I like the PP idea of playing it by ear based on how the baby it doing.
And we did have to keep DS's door open once he was in his own room or it got really cold in there.

  • I've been told the same info as one of the PP. I'm a FTM... But in our baby classes at the hospital they recommended keeping the house between 68-73 which just so happens to work fine for us.
  • Thanks for the insight everyone. We'll play it by ear when she comes and see how she does :-)

  • Seem you already got all the answers needed, but to confirm the nurse from the class told us 72. But I think at night it makes sense to go down to 68 indeed
  • Everything I've read / learned says they're just like us and need cooler temps to sleep well and to just add a layer of clothes. We keep our AC on 67 at night.
  • I never altered the temp for my daughter and she was a January baby. They are just like us.
Also to get a good gauge of their temp don't feel their hands or cheeks- check their neck and chest. Their fingers might feel a little cold but that's usually common.
My daughter was always warm, especially being on top of me nursing so much.
She wore either a cotton sleeper with a sleep sack/swaddle or a fleece sleeper.

I'm weird, but I always do a "kiss test" on the back of their neck or chest.  My hands tend to fluctuate in temperature so I can't get an accurate read that way.
If there's something strange underneath the hood.  Who you gonna call?  Your Doctor.  If there's something weird and it don't look good.  Who you gonna call?  Your Doctor.  Immediately.  If it's new, painful, and possibly pregnancy related get your ass off the internet and call your doctor.  It's for your health and your child's.
