2nd Trimester

Suddenly greasy scalp - ICK!

Yesterday I used a different shampoo/conditioner and thought I hadn't washed all of the conditioner out, so I ran my head under the sink and didn't see anything come out.
I assumed it was the shampoo/conditioner, so I switched this morning, spent and longer amount of time rinsing it all out and again.....greasy/oily hair at the scalp.
I've never had this problem, but read it happens sometimes in pregnancy.
Anyone have any home remedies or tips to knock the oil out?

  • Tea tree oil! You can either buy shampoo/conditioner with it or buy a bottle of it and add a few drops to your existing shampoo/conditioner. Don't put it directly on the skin though, because it can get a bit tingly and uncomfortable.

  • I've noticed the same thing is happening with my hair too. I've switched shampoos and it seems to have helped. If the problem returns I may try @DrillSergeantCat ideas for tea tree oil. My hair just feels gross... :(

  • I stopped using conditioner altogether. It's been a life saver.
  • This is going to sound so weird..... I get build up in my hair like once a year and my hair does the same thing. My grandma is very old polish and told me to rinse my hair in apple cider vinegar in the shower before I washed it. SUPER DUPER WEIRD, but it works.... After switching shampoos and conditioners multiple times, nothing would make the build up go away until I tried that. I have naturally oily-er skin and hair, so I find using clear shampoo vs creamy shampoo works better and I only condition the ends, and not my scalp. Good luck!

Yes. Its marvelous, but do use it sparingly because it can get quite icy-hot and burny if you go too crazy!

  • Thanks everyone for the ideas! I had a busy weekend and didn't get a chance to buy tea tree oil (yet), but I did use a clear shampoo (which I find less 'moisturizing') and that seemed to work, as well as applying a little baking soda to the scalp once the shampoo was on.  It was a quick fix that worked amazingly!

Just be careful with the baking soda as it can change the pH of your hair and give you a weird texture. I'm glad you found something that worked though!

  • Yep, i second the tea tree oil.  If I've already done my hair and I've noticed it's greasy, I usually put some baby powder in my brush and just brush it through and that always helps a lot.

  • I'm too lazy to Google.  Where is the best place to find Tea Tree Oil?

  • Paul mitchell has a shampoo with tea tree oil...works great but i still use dry shampoo day 2 and 3 i go 3-4 days with out washing
  • I too have had this problem recently. This past week I switched to tea tree shampoo and today I lightly spray dry shampoo on my scalp after styling - This combo has seemed to help a lot!
  • I have this issue as well (and did with DD). I use cleansing shampoos. Specifically I love the Tresseme cleansing shampoo but right now I happen to be using Herbal Essences cleansing shampoo. When I'm not pg these shampoos make my hair brittle and dry but being pg they've been awesome and you're not paying an arm and a leg for them. I also spray leave in conditioner only on my ends after my shower. Hope this helps!
