1st Trimester

Traveling During the First Trimester

My pregnancy wasn't exactly planned, but I wasn't taking precautions to not have a baby either. Either way I am happy, but I am traveling to Las Vegas in less than 2 weeks with my best friend. We hav had this trip planned and paid for since the beginning of September ( I am only 5 weeks and 5 days along). We are going to celebrate my birthday and just have a good girls weekend. I know that all the drinking we planned is out of the question for me, but instead of being excited about my trip as it nears I get more nervous. I know it's not safe to travel during the 3rd trimester but did anyone have any complications traveling during the first?

Also, I have read that drinking a glass of wine here and there is fine. What has been other's experiences with this. I am becoming this big ball of worry!

Re: Traveling During the First Trimester

  • I traveled a lot in my first tri. I did have to get a garbage bag on a plane once because the throw-up bags they offer you at your seat.....wasn't sufficient......

But I am prone to motion sickness anyway, so that could be a me thing. In general, it helped me to get to the airport early so I wasn't rushed or stressed and to pack snacks (apples, popcorn, etc). But you may be one of the lucky few who doesn't have symptoms, so this could be nothing to worry about. I will say that I cancelled a trip to New Orleans toward the end of my first tri because I couldn't stomach the idea of the smells or people smoking everywhere, which may also be an issue in Vegas.

But again, you may be lucky and not have issues. Also, if you are going in less than 2 weeks you will be roughly 7 weeks along. Almost all my friends didn't get bad symptoms till at least 9 weeks, so you may be in that sweet spot as well.

I am not really a drinker, so I don't drink a ton in Vegas when I am not pregnant.

It is fine to travel during your first trimester. Just be mindful that you could experience morning sickness.

As for drinking, I would say definitely not in the first trimester. The AAP just put out a new report that says "No amount of alcohol should be considered safe to drink during any trimester of pregnancy." Talk to your doctor.

ETA: the ACOG and the CDC also say no drinking. Italy and the UK are the only countries that advise against drinking, but say if you do choose to drink, limit it to 1 drink a week.

  • drinking a glass on wine here & there, in my opinion, is fine. I've had a couple glasses during my pregnancy & baby is healthy & growing normally. but to each their own!

i dont see there being any complications. i actually unknowingly travelled during my 1st tri out to Ontario to meet my SO's family. we found out i was 6.5 weeks along a couple days after i got back. everything went fine, & i wasnt being careful cause i had no idea i was pregnant, lol. the only thing i would say to do would be to stay out of hot tubs if that's something that you were wanting to do. raising your body temperature can potentially insuce a miscarriage, which is something you don't want!
  • Ok, great! I did not know that tidbit about bath tubs! I really appreciate that! I love hot baths and bath tubs so I'm glad I know to not do that. Thank you so much!
  • Like PPs have said, just make sure you stay hydrated and stretch. You may feel sick. I had to drive 4 hours and then fly for a conference when I was 6 weeks pregnant, and the only issue I had was with my rampant morning sickness.

As for drinking, I would definitely pass during the first trimester. My OB said that an occasional glass of wine was fine during the third trimester, but advised against anything before that point.

  • @sarahufl I am prone to motion sickness as well. Car rides, where i am not driving, have become slightly unbearable. So I will bring a garbage bag. And be prepared just in case.
  • @snarkasaurusRex thanks. Yea I'm glad I am finding out all of this information. Motion sickness has been a big bother since I found out I was preggers. Glad to know what your OB told me. My first ob appointment is wednesday. So my drinking money will go towards gambling and really good food! All my bar choices are being replaced with yummy eats.  I'm also going to see Britney while there. I am still gonna have a blast just revamping the plan!

Travel is not an issue until later and even then  you can be cleared by your OB.

The American Academy of Pediatrics has released a new study saying NO alcohol during pregnancy. My midwife ok'd 4 ounces of RED wine (not spirits, beer or champagne, or white wine) for the tannins and relaxation during the last 2 weeks of pregnancy, but not before. Different CNM and practices advocate differences with booze and culturally Europe and other countries are more relaxed with regards to alcohol.

For me personally, booze makes me very ill while pregnant. I have never taken a sip because just the SMELL makes me run for a trash can and feel dizzy/sick/horrible. However, even if it didn't I still would feel uncomfortable given my research. There has been no proven amount safe. I'm pretty relaxed with food (soft cheese, sushi and rare meat), but booze and raw milk etc. I avoid. Its just not worth it to me to take that gamble. I would feel awful if down the line my kid had even a minor version of FAS. Often that diagnosis doesn't come until later childhood. I have two dear friends that have cognitive and other delays because their moms drank while pregnant. It was a different time. They had problems in school and other social issues-- still do.

So, I can't recommend even a little wine.

  • @PrimRoseMama thanks, I am reading it now. The more I see things and the more I read I feel so guilty about the drinks I have before I found out I was pregnant. The sunday before I found out I had a few mimosa's and then margarita's. I can't see myself drinking at all during my pregnancy. I read so many different things but my mom didn't drink a drop when she found out she was preggers and even stopped smoking completely when she found out she was expecting me. Good information.

(((hugs))) Please be kind to yourself. You didn't know you had a baby on board. Its an interesting dynamic, because on TTGP we tell folks to drink until its pink. You don't "share" (not really an accurate word but easier to use) blood supply with the fetus until around 6 weeks anyway. So baby is pretty insulated from any booze or other things that you partake in before the HPT turns pink.

@franniep1108 : IMHO its a whole other game before you get a positive HPT. Its all about personal choice once the baby is on board and you know about it. I just choose to be extra cautious with this one thing. Others choose to go whole-hog and cut caffeine (not necessary IMHO), and the others (sushi, soft cheese etc) because it makes them more comfortable. Some choose to drink still and even some choose to smoke still. Its not wise, IMHO but its not my body or my baby-- so I can just do what feels right for me.

Some think its unwise for me to still like rare steak and sushi while pregnant. I figure the chances (pure math) for listeria with rare meat is lower risk than FAS percentages while drinking. Same is true with caffeine. My kids already have speech delays genetically (runs on my husband's side). I'm pretty sure that #3 might struggle that way too. I don't want to add more complication on top of what I am pretty sure would be #3's lot anyway. Just my own personal weighing the risks.

There are no benefits to drinking while pregnant that outweigh the risk to the fetus for me. Others can choose to do differently and I won't say they are making poor choices. I will say it would be a poor choice for me because I would be sick. I would worry about what I'm doing to my kid who has no choice. So, that's the long and short of it for me.

    Ditto.
  • Going back to the travel question - I went on a pre-planned trip to Japan at about 7 weeks and I have never been more miserable in my life. I was just so sick, and on the rare occasion that I could think of foods I might possibly want to eat (Cinnamon Toast Crunch mostly) they weren't available. I know Vegas isn't exactly Japan and some ladies don't have morning sickness at all, but definitely worth getting some sort of travel insurance if possible in case you feel horrible and want to call it off.
  • I just flew from Indonesia to the US at 5 wks. It's about 19 hours total flight time and I didn't experience any issues.

you are very welcome (: i didnt know either until my mom told me. i love having hot baths as well. i still take them, but keep the temperature down, & get out & cool off if i feel myself getting too warm.
  • @goatsnakemouth I actually did get the extra insurance but I want to suck it up! Because if I dont do it now I won't be able to do it for a couple of years. I am just praying that it isn't so bad.
  • Hey there, I am traveling for work right now -- Miami -- and am 11 weeks and 4 days along. I have to admit, the flight wasn't fun. The smells aren't fun. Walking a lot isn't fun. At 7 weeks, I would've been pretty miserable, as my symptoms were bleh back then, but it would've been safe. And this trip is safe. It's going to be hard to say how you'll feel in 2 weeks. At 5 weeks, I was symptom free...at 6, BLEEEH. And now, I'm almost symptom free again... I know that's not much help. But, yes, it's safe. Yes, you can travel if you want.

  • You can still travel in the third trimester!
Personally I'd avoid all alcohol but I guess it's up to you.
Don't forget to avoid smoky areas, there are plenty of 'em in Vegas. Have fun!

I live in Las Vegas, and you can come to Vegas, not drink, and have a blast. Also, the climate is so dry here, that it's easy to get dehydrated. Before I was pregnant, I would get the worst hangovers here vs. when I lived on the east coast just a year previous. I drink so much water, even before pregnancy. I probably drink over 200 ounces of water a day here, I kid you not. I'm a huge wino - I have a wine collection. I worked in a wine shop as a hobby. The thought of drinking a glass of wine right now makes me want to vomit. Chances are in two weeks, you'll run away from the smell alcohol. :)

The good thing about being sober in Vegas is you won't spend as much money. We have saved so. much. money. now that I'm not slinging back $20 cocktails or buying bottles of wine with dinner. There are so many unbelievable spas and restaurants here for you to indulge in. Go to shows and skip the ultraclubs. The best ones have $90 covers, and the headliners don't come on until about 1-2am. I don't know about you, but if I can make it to 10pm, I feel like I've done the impossible. My big mocktail that I do on the strip is asking for a ginger beer in a copper mug. I feel like I'm still having a drink, but I'm not.

Everyone is different symptom wise, but at 5 weeks the only thing I felt was fatigue and bloating. I was (stupidly) on my BMB complaining about wanting to feel symptoms to know I'm pregnant, and by week 6 they hit me like I truck. I got what I asked for, and now in week 11, I'm still feeling nauseous. I don't make distant plans anymore - I have to go day by day.

My suggestion to you as a LV local who is also pregnant is to plan a fantastic spa day, make some good restaurant reservations, see some shows, window shop at all the designer stores, play Wheel of Fortune or some black jack, then roll back to your suite and sleep in your nice plush hotel bed. Vegas has this reputation that have you have to be sloshed to have a good time, but there's so much to do to keep you entertained. Plus, you can sober watch all the drunk girls trying to walk in their 5 inch heels after doing 10 shots. If you don't know how to gamble, play during the day when it's slower. You can always ask the dealer "What does the book say?" or tell them you're trying to learn, and they'll help you.
  • I'm on the same boat as those that have mentioned how awful they felt on their trips. I traveled for most of my 1st trimester and I was miserable. I felt constant exhaustion and non-stop morning sickness. Plus, I was home sick the whole time. I just wanted MY bed and MY home. DH felt so bad for me that he re-worked our travel plans and we came home earlier than planned.

  • I'm just under 6 weeks and flew to New York 2 days ago, have a few more days here then off to Vegas. The only thing so far that's getting me is how exhausted I am, even more than usual! Not to mention the constant peeing and there's hardly any public toilets around here. Also haven't experienced morning sickness yet so that's a plus :) *touch wood.
Hope you have a good trip!
  • @taylahP Awesome! And thanks!
  • Travel wont harm the baby or anything. The only reasons some people chose not to travel in first tri are morning sickness and (for some) since the risk of miscarriage is higher, they want to stay closer to home (and to their OB) just in case something does happen.
To answer your question about drinking- that's a personal choice. My OB said a glass of wine once a month is fine, but I've chosen to abstain. Some OB's recommend complete abstinence- others are ok with a glass every now and then. Good luck! :-)
