HELP: worried about weight gain and symptoms

I went for my regular check up yesterday and my doctor scared me a little. I am 23 weeks pregnant and my baby weighs about 3-4 lbs and i have gained 16 lbs. She wants me to watch my weight but i barely eat. I dont have any cravings and i try to eat as healthy as i can. She also said that my symptoms are not normal at 23 weeks. I have a hard time sleeping already, shortness of breath at night. And this past week my husband has notice that i am sleeping a lot more and that i complain that i am tired all the time. Also my legs and feet hurt a lot at night and i feel like i have no circulation on my feet at times. I feel heavy from the waist down now and i am having a hard time walking. Doctor said that all of those symptoms should happen at 30 weeks pregnant. She wants me to get some lab work done to make sure im still healthy. Has anyone else had this problem? I am worried and this is my first baby.

This stuff is NORMAL. I'm going through the same at 25 weeks, and I don't know why she would say it's not normal. Your weight gain is fine. I'm up 31 lbs and she told me that was perfectly okay so 16 lbs is fine too.

agreed- it all sounds pretty normal. For the sleeping thing try a snoogle or a body pillow and if you are rolling onto your back try to prop everything up to keep you on your side. My hips have been a bit irritated since about 18 weeks. There is also a thread going on the first page about chiropractors helping with hip pains.

Some people's OBGYNs are a lot more picky than others with things like weight but I've never heard ANYONE say that those types of symptoms aren't common. If you read through the symptoms and complaints threads those seem more common than to not have them.

^^this! I haven't had any comments from the doctor on my weight until this morning's appointment and all she said was that my weight was good. I actually brought it up after saying that I'm glad I haven't had any weight gain comments because I know I'll lose it all after and she said that my weight gain wasn't bad at all and nothing to worry about.

  • This sounds like my first pregnancy exactly. I had trouble breathing from 20 something weeks until my daughter dropped because she was so high. Was so uncomfortable in every way and I was tired all the time because I didn't sleep well being so uncomfortable. I didn't eat a lot because nothing sounded good. I gained a good 35lbs that pregnancy and my dr was never concerned. That baby is now two and currently removing all the cousins from my couch. Honestly that all sounds pretty standard to me
  • Ok thank you for your response im glad im not the only one. And yes i sleep on my side now and i use a regular pillow between my legs but sometimes nothing helps my discomfort
  • Thank that makes feel a little better. My doctor dud worry me telling me my symptoms arent normal.
  • How did they estimate baby's weight? Did you have a recent ultrasound? I have read that there is no accurate way for doctors to predict baby's weight -- it's all an estimate. Also, have you had your GD testing done yet?

I would not be worried about the 16 lbs at all either! I'm up 21 lbs and am 23 weeks. My midwife has me track my diet and is seriously impressed with the dense nutrition of my meals. I think some of those guidelines are kinda silly though. Everyone's body is different and I honestly feel like our body's naturally know what is best for supporting the growth of the baby. Basically, if you are eating a healthy, well-balanced diet and getting some exercise, then you are doing everything you should be.
  • Yeah, I don't know what pregnant women your dr deals with lol, but honestly you sound like a woman who is growing a baby. It's uncomfortable for most women! No worries :)
  • Your doctor sounds like a worry wort to me! All of those symptoms are completely normal at this time. Your weight gain sounds fine and healthy, too!

  • My doctor gave me a bit of a warning about weight gain at my last appointment too, and of course it stings.  But seriously, their weight recommendations are pretty arbitrary.  If you check out some of the weight threads here, you'll see that women gain different amounts at different times. Some weeks it might jump up and others it might be stagnant.  Since your doctor ordered lab tests, she and you will have more conclusive answers about your other symptoms.  But as others have said, it sounds pretty "normal" in the grand scheme of things (bearing in mind that there is no "normal" for pregnancy - everyone is different!).  In the meantime, don't get too down on yourself.  You're making a whole baby!

I think 16 lbs is perfectly fine! I am up 12 lbs and my Dr. said it was right on track - everyone is different. I gained a total of 40 lbs with my son and my Dr. wasn't worried at all.

  • I am 25 weeks- I have a hard time sleeping and my legs hurt at night too. Sometimes I wake up with leg cramps or my legs just feel achy. I feel like I waddle now sometimes because of the pressure on my lower abdomen. I think what you're feeling is pretty normal, so I wouldn't worry too much!
  • I agree with PPs. This all sounds normal. I have trouble sleeping most nights because of hip and leg pain and this makes me tired thing the day. I waddle a lot during the day because of the hip pain. Also, I'm up 15 lbs and I'm only 21 weeks and my Dr. is not concerned. Don't worry too much!
  • So sorry you are going through all that stress with your dr, but I think it all sounds pretty normal too. I am confused about the 3-4 pound range the dr gave you for babies weight though. Did you have a ultrasound? Try not to stress too much about it though. Get your tests done, see if you get any answers that you guys are looking for and move forward from there. Good luck!
  • I went yesterday for my 24 week appt, I think I'm up 15-20 pounds. They didn't say anything about my weight gain at all nor do they know how much the baby weighs. She weighed 10-12 oz at 19w6d I think. But they haven't said anything, so I'm not worried about it.
  • I'm having some of the same symptoms at 24 weeks and every different OB I see agrees that it's fine. I'm approaching my 20 pound weight gain mark soon, but I did get very sick and lose a lot in the beginning. We never see the same OB because the clinic is smaller and they have different OBs for different months.
Just elevate your feet and rub your legs as much as you can to stimulate circulation and prevent clots! You can never be too safe with that. I get chest pain and shortness of breath all the time and will randomly need to stop waking to catch my breath. Some women don't handle the pressure of pregnancy on their lungs as well, it doesn't mean you've gained too much weight or that you're dying. It just means you aren't the same as the person next to you. Every pregnancy is different, which I personally find to be a beautiful thing.

Also, my baby was a pound at 19w + 5 and now that I'm 24 + 3 I think she's at 4 pounds they said. Your Ob is just being precautionary.
  • Thank you very much for all of your comments. It really keeps me at ease to know that im not the only one feeling strong symptoms at this time.

I'm 26 weeks + and baby weight range is 1.5-2.5 lbs so... I doubt your baby is 4 lbs right now. Otherwise I agree with the idea that not everyone handles pregnancy the same.
