Advice is desperately needed! My LO is 14 months old and he can not hear no for an answer. Anyone else experiencing this? I don't remember going through is with my other two boys. Not sure what I'm doing different.... HELP! [-O<
DD (16 mo) is like this. When she is told no, she cries/tantrums... To which I say, bummer. Usually I try to give her another option of something to do (no you can't be on the fireplace surround, but you can bounce on these pillows etc). Consistently not letting her cries change the answer has cut down the number of times she does this by a lot, but it's still a work in process.
The word "no" loses it's power after a while. I typically save "no" for dangerous situations. The rest of the time, we use redirection, positive reinforcement for appropriate behaviours, distraction, and give alternatives.

I obviously don't know how dangerous you consider dangerous, but I strongly recommend using no regularly enough that they know what it means. My daycare kiddo's parents only want to use no in "life or death" style dangerous situations (at home), so when I say no to things like hitting other kids he's never heard it before and doesn't react at all. It's scares me that he won't react if they use it in said dangerous situation because he doesn't know it's a serious word.
ETA- I completely agree that the things you listed are great tools for avoiding using no 3 million times a day
How about interchanging "no" with things like "we don't eat our shoes" or "you cannot climb on that" etc for things that are not unsafe. Those dangerous things definitely use a firm "no". To be honest, telling and moving/redirecting at the same time usually work the best for my kiddos. Lately they have been catching onto it here and there when I give them a displeased look but it will eventually all sink in. Good luck!
