Thoughts on...

...Cormac? Pronounced Cor-mick. It's Irish. If you've heard it before, it's probably Cormac McCarthy, the Pulitzer Prize winning author. Otherwise, it's pretty unknown I think.

Re: Thoughts on...

  • That's pretty bad.... Sounds like you are trying to shorten McCormick ....
  • Loading the player...
  • My DH suggested it and I hated it.  Then I started liking it and it was on our list for our first born.  We didn't use it but I think I still like it actually.  I was going to pronounce it the same way.
  • i keep hearing cognac
  • Not my favorite, but no side eye from me.

Unless your last name IS Mccarthy, then you're a jerk for even considering it.

(No lie, there was a Cormac Mccarthy at my uni. We tossed his equipment rental app out cause we thought some asshole was ducking around, this was shortly after No country for old men came out and every film student was jerking off to it. Metaphorically, in most cases)
  • NMS but I think it's just fine on someone else's kid :)

  • I like it a lot. It's the name of my friend's dad, so it seems normal to me.
  • it is fine.
  • I hope you're getting opinions on other sites as well. This board is pretty standard in what it likes. I posted recently guessing what the reaction would be & I was spot on. :)

I don't have any opinion on your name either way.
  • Love it!!!!

  • I like it and think it's a good association.
  • Love it as well... was on my short list for a boy (but so far we've been blessed with 2 girls).
  • Not my style but I don't hate it either. I'm not Irish so when I see it I pronounce it Cor-Mac. Sorry.
  • I'm Irish and I love cool, different names. I don't know I would use it on my own child-- but I definitely wouldn't side eye it.

  • I don't mind it but for some reason it does make me think alcohol, like a pp said, similar to cognac I guess!

Yes, your response is much more helpful.
  • It's already a name: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cormac

I'm not trying to do anything, other than get opinions on what people think of this already established name.

    Thanks for the input, all.
  • I'm not a fan.
  • I don't mind it. I think lots of people will pronounce it Cor-mac tho.
  • Its NMS, but not because it is something that isn't popular. Its NMS because I think that most people are going to see it and pronounce it Cor-Mac (which is what I first thought as well). And it would drive me crazy having to correct people all of the time, and I would hate to have my child have to correct people all of the time.

  • I LOVE IT. (But I'm biased because I love Cormac McCarthy.) :) it's unique and not crazy sounding.

  • I'm Irish so I'm familiar with this name. It's nms but wouldn't side eye it. As a rule, I love Irish names!
