Short cervix 26 weeks!! Help

Went to OB yesterday for ultrasound on cervix. Cervix is measuring 1.6 from 3.1. Dr has put me on bed rest I see specialist on Monday and will know more then. So of course every twinge puts me on edge. Has anyone else experienced this or something similar?

Re: Short cervix 26 weeks!! Help

  • Yes! You should head over to the high risk board, there are quite a few of us! My measurements this pregnancy went from: 4cm @ 18 weeks, 2.2 @ 22 weeks, 1.8 @ 23 weeks, 1.4 @ 24 weeks, 1.4 @ 25 weeks.  I have been on bed rest since 22 weeks and am on vaginal progesterone and now only getting checked biweekly since things seem to be leveling out. I am not contracting, dilating, or having any other signs of preterm labor, but my cervix is short, dynamic, AND funneling (measurements above are the "average" for the weekly measurements but usually ranged from 1.0-2.5). Have they done a fetal fibronectin yet? That will give you some peace of mind, and may be something the specialist will do!

Keep in mind that 26 weeks is a great place to be. With a cervix at 1.6, you're unlikely to be in any emergent PTL situation, and even if you were, baby is already at a 90% survival rate according to what my MFM gave me as far as goals and survival rates. Also check out keepemcookin, com, they have a lot of great information including average GA for delivery based on cervical measurement at certain weeks of pregnancy, and there is also a forum to chat with other ladies on bed rest, most of which have cervical change or incompetence.

The most important thing to remember is that a short/shortening cervix is an indicator of possible preterm labor/delivery, but it is not a guarantee. Women hang on for months with far less cervix than either of us have! The good news is that they found it and you are getting care. Sorry this is so long, but I am in week 5 of this journey and wanted to share my experience so far and answer the questions I know I had right away when I was in your shoes! Stay hydrated, keep your bladder empty (oxymoron, almost, but you'll find the balance) and don't hesitate to reach out if you need to chat. Bed rest is something most people underestimate. There are a lot of emotional effects of it that one can't really understand until having been through it. Just know you are not alone!

  • Thanks OP for the post, and PP for giving all that information and encouragement. I may be headed in this direction (again) and am just taking it all in, one day at a time. Good luck to you both!!

  • @JoJoMama730 good luck to you too momma!! The good news is we are getting closer to the end every single day, and we can let out a sigh of relief every morning we wake up still pregnant! Reach out if you need anything, it's not an easy road but we can do it in the name of healthy  babies! :)
