Taking LO to childcare at gym?

Baby is almost 8 weeks old. I'm dying to get to the gym. How does everyone feel about an infant this young spending time in the childcare room? Unfortunately I don't have anyone available during the day to watch him and if I wait until my husband gets home in the evening to plan a workout I'm afraid it will get too late for me to go. After dinner, cleaning up, tending to my older kids, etc I can easily see time slipping by and me not making it in. I'd bathe him and change his clothes as soon as we got home from the gym. Is it still a bad idea? At what age would it be safer immunity and germ wise?

Re: Taking LO to childcare at gym?

  • Have you checked your gym's policy? I know mine requires infants be at least 3 months and you have to make reservations between 3 months and one year of age with advanced notice.

  • I'm pretty sure mine is 6 weeks although I'll look into it! Good thought!
  • The gym I go to accepts children starting at 6 months of age. I think I'd feel comfortable bringing at that point.

Another arrangement I was thinking of was to go before DH goes to work.. so getting a workout in from 5am-6am and giving him baby duty for an hour before work.

  • I would be too worried about germs and the other (possibly sick) kids baby could come in contact with, especially with flu season starting. I wouldn't trust other parents to leave their sick kids at home. But I'm also probably more cautious than others when it comes to that ... I got the flu and pnemonia during first tri and was miserable for 6 weeks, so I'm not anxious to experience that ever again and it's made me more paranoid when it comes to germs! That being said, if your baby will be going to daycare anytime soon he would be in contact with other kids then anyways. I also would have a hard time letting a stranger watch my baby, even for a short time, but I'm probably just overprotective right now!
  • I'm not a germaphobe by any means (it's pretty much impossible to be with a 5, 3 and 2 year old at home) but I don't think I'd be comfortable taking a baby that young to a childcare at the gym. Mainly because of cold and flu season coming and like pp said, people aren't always considerate and often bring snotty kids to the gym and it's not like the baby would be in a separate room like in a traditional daycare setting :-( sorry mama

What about checking out some new fitness dvds from the library? I know it's not the same but I got in awesome shape and lost 50lbs just doing dvds in my living room. Plop baby in the swing and have your older kids color or do the DVD with you. I really liked the biggest loser cardio blast DVD and the biggest loser last chance workout. I did those 5 days a week and went from being completely inactive to able to run 5 mile runs within 3 months so they definitely work to get you back in a fitness routine. The library is great because you can try a bunch of different dvds to find what you like then you can buy it cheap on amazon or ebay once you know you like it. Hth!

  • If it's worth your child catching a cold or other virus, go for it. You might be fine, but there's always that risk you'd be taking. I wouldn't trust the quality of cleanliness and care at a gym being that childcare isn't their main focus.
  • I wouldn't trust the caregivers they hired for a gym to know how to handle a newborn.
  • Many babies start daycare between 6-8 weeks so it isn't abnormal to put a baby that age in childcare. However, staff at daycares *hopefully* are well trained to care for newborns and the rooms are equipt to meet their needs. My concern would be the staff qualifications. Are they hired to work specifically in that room or is it any high school kid on staff? I'd also be worried how clean the room is- like if it's constantly rotating staff and kids, how often are they wiping down to tables/ toys?
  • As PP said, I wouldn't trust the level of care or the cleanliness of the gym daycare. Any gym I've ever belonged to didn't allow babies under 6 months and I even think that's too young. How about workout videos?

  • My gym takes them at six weeks and I really want to get back into going but I'm not ready to leave my little guy. He's seven weeks but I feel like he's too young. My husband is deployed so I really don't have anyone else to watch him but I'm just too nervous. A Facebook friend who takes her kids to the same gym just had her four month old come down with chicken pox! I'm starting T-25 tomorrow since that's something I can do at home.
