Acupuncture

Anyone going to acupuncture? I scheduled two appointments for next week (39 weeks). Apparently helpful in helping prime your body and with easing anxiety.

Has anyone tried acupuncture for inducing labor instead of a medical induction?

Re: Acupuncture

  • I have been getting acupuncture since before conception (fertility acupuncture) and going every 2 weeks throughout my pregnancy.  I am 38 weeks this week, so at m appointment she will start to introduce points for labor.  She has said though (like everything else) that they are meant to relax your body, which helps make labor easier and will only work if baby is ready.  She has had great success with her patients, who have seen her throughout their pregnancies, they have quicker and minimal intervention labors.  So I am excited to see what my experience will be.  I obviously haven't gone in to labor yet, but I highly recommend acupuncture in general. It not only helped me conceive but has helped manage my symptoms, helped me sleep better (pre-pregnancy), along with many other things.  I would feel totally comfortable trying it if I were you.

  • I've never had acupuncture, but would most definitely try before induction. I've heard great things about it from people who've had if for various reasons during pregnancy!
  • I agree with everything @modanz1 said. Pre-pregnancy I did accupuncture to alleviate painful menstrual cramps due to cysts in my ovaries and after the first session I no longer needed to take a bottle of advice to make it thru the day. Since I became pregnant I gone for pain management and this week I will start a series of treatments to help with labor. I did three sessions with my son and 2 hours after the third my water broke. I was 40w3d when that happened but I truly believe it was because I was so relaxed that I finally allowed my body to do what it needed to.
  • I've had 2 sessions to try and induce labour before my induction. I'm still pregnant but he's moved much lower so I'm hoping it's going to help my body be more willing to be induced.

I guess we shall find out tomorrow.
  • @TacoSarah ask your acupuncturist to try a different method. My first two sessions I was face down and the third I was on my back and that change seemed to make a difference...
  • With my first pregnancy I did acupuncture to treat carpal tunnel syndrome and other things. It didn't really do much to relieve those symptoms but I did receive a treatment to induce labour after my water broke and I went several hours with no signs of labour/contractions. Within 2 hours of the acupuncture I was having contractions and baby was in my arms 17 hours later. I will definitely be doing it again if necessary :-)
