1st Trimester

Pregnancy Blues

Hi all, not sure if anyone else is experiencing the "blues" of the first trimester. I know I should just be floating on cloud nine but unfortunately I am feeling the opposite. I'm very happy to be pregnant and can't wait until June of next year but I sure wish there was a way to not feel so down.  I live in a climate where the weather is changing and that always influences my mood as well so I think this year it's just a double whammy with the weather and the hormones. Anyone else struggling with this?

Re: Pregnancy Blues

  • Yes. You are not alone in feeling down the first trimester of your pregnancy. I am counting down the freakin' minutes until I'm into the 2nd tri. Between having a loss in April, being put on progesterone pills(which have caused all of my symptoms to go into overdrive), and general pregnancy yuck feelings I would happily climb into a hole and hibernate for the next 7ish months.

  • I'm sorry for your loss in April! I so wish I could climb in a hole and hibernate as well, it's awful. You know you want to be happy and excited but your hormones are fighting against you. Thank you for sharing.
  • Do not feel bad that you're not on "cloud nine." Ignore all the bs that says you're supposed to feel a certain way. You'll feel how you feel and there's not much you can do about it. If it gets too bothersome, talk to your OB. I think listening to the "you should be so happy" groups will just make you feel worse.

  • Thank you for the honesty. I agree the "oh this is so blissful" talk gets old real quick when you are feeling down in the dumps :)
  • I feel the same way, def not cloud 9. More like cloud 1! Haha perfectly normal.
  • I'm with you on the blues. Can't quite shake them. For me it's the weird feeling I have in my stomach... A little nausea, a little crampy feeling... It's draining emotionally and physically.
Last night I was on Pinterest looking up "positive thinking" !!!! LOL (It kinda helped!)
This is my first post, BTW. So happy to hear y'all are in the same boat with me!
  • wish I saw this before I posted mine, I definitely feel depressed, but don't understand why as I really do want this baby and am so excited. I feel like I can totally handle motherhood, so it was really making the way I'm feeling worse. I feel so out of touch with myself and frustrated that I can't find the root of my depression. I know now it's just part of the changes going on and I need to just keep tabs myself to make sure it doesn't get worse and hopefully it will go away soon.

Can you ask your doctor to check your iron and vitamin D levels? Often SAD (Season Affective Disorder) can stem from the changes in sunlight, vitamin D and even fluxuating hemoglobin (anemia) levels.

  • I'm right there with you sister. I have fully weaned off of depression meds for the well being of the baby. I'm being closely monitored and will get back on them if need be. My doctor says for certain I will start taking it again a week before my due date to help with postpartum. Pregnancy hormones make me feel like my emotions can be flipped off and on like a switch. My mother is also battling brain cancer (diagnosed in August) which is a big source of stress and sadness. We conceived because we want a child and want my mom to experience being a grandma. What really helps me is thinking about what a huge blessing this is and the huge smile my mom will have when she meets baby. Also, walks, time with hubby, CHOCOLATE, and planning the nursery decor (a huge hobby of mine). Sorry for the novel. I completely relate. I'm sure you'll be on cloud nine very soon.
